Rafa turns down Reds deal
Friday 16 Jan 2009

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has confirmed he has rejected the terms of a new contract offered to him by the club's American owners.

Benitez, 48, revealed last week that the length of contract and salary had been agreed in principle.

However, his four-and-a-half year association with the Reds has now been thrown into doubt with the Spaniard unhappy over the managerial structure currently in place.

The former Valencia coach, who has won the Champions League and one FA Cup during his time on Merseyside, wants complete control over the club's transfer policy.

He is unhappy that current chief executive Rick Parry - with whom he has not always seen eye-to-eye - remains in charge of player recruitment. Benitez is also believed to want more control over the club's academy structure.

He told the Liverpool Echo: "The owners feel that the manager's decisions need to be subject to the chief executive. But I know that I am subject to results and to our fans and they are the best judges I will ever have.

"I have a lot of experience in football at different clubs and if you do not have a technical director and you are the manager you have to have control of the football decisions. But always within the confines of a budget which is controlled by the owners and the club.

"In this scenario the manager knows the amount money he has available to him and can decide how much he should spend on each player according to the needs of the team.

"The only person who can decide the value of a player to his squad is the manager because he knows what elements are needed to improve the squad."

However, Benitez has denied suggestions that his move is designed to solicit improved terms from the club's American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks.

"My relationship with the owners is better than people think," he continued. "I have regular contact with them and especially with Tom Hicks who has always been very supportive.

"The talks between my agent and the advisers of the owners have been very positive and friendly and our differences are about my responsibilities.

"I have to say again that this is not about financial gain. This is not a way to get more money. This is solely about being allowed to manage Liverpool football club to the best of my abilities as I see them.

"I believe that this club has the potential to improve and I just want to be able to help this to happen. I will continue to do my job as manager and concentrate on the thing that our fans want me to focus on - winning trophies for them.

"From the first day I came to the club I have only ever given 100 per cent and I will continue to do this.

"We have a very important game coming up against Everton on Monday night and now I just want to be able to concentrate only on this."

Cole ruled out for rest of the season
Saturday, 17 January 2009 15:23

Chelsea have been rocked by the loss of England midfielder Joe Cole for the rest of the season.

The 27-year-old ruptured a cruciate ligament during the 4-1 FA Cup third-round replay win over Southend in midweek and underwent surgery in London this morning.

Cole's loss will be a massive blow to under-fire Chelsea coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.

The Brazilian is already at odds with star striker Didier Drogba, who he axed for the second time in four days against Stoke City.

Cole's knee injury also rules him out of England's friendlies against Spain and Slovakia along with their World Cup qualifier with Ukraine at Wembley in April.

It is doubtful he will be fully recovered in time to play any part in the June qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra.

Scolari declared: 'We have had some bad news about Joe Cole, who has a knee injury and will be out for some time. It is a big disappointment for Joe and a big loss to the squad. We wish him the best recovery.'

Captain John Terry added: 'We're all behind Coley to get fit as soon as possible. He's going to be a big miss for us and I keep on saying he's the one who really opens things up in tight moments.

'He did it again on Wednesday against Southend. What a pass he produced for Salomon Kalou's goal.

'We're all gutted for him and we know how much it means to him to be playing.

'No-one will be more hurt at missing games through injury. But one thing we all know is that he'll work just as hard off the pitch to get fit as he does on it.'

The bit in bold sounds like what their matches against will probably be like.

:D excellent...
