He would, simply because he is an inventive attacking midfielder with pace and skill and hard to take the ball of because he is an explosive dribbler. In this case, as a winger, he would be considerably better choice then Diaby, Denilson and Eboue, who basically are their wingers right now (though not his best position, is not so versatile, really only does damage as a free roaming forward, ala Van Persie).

Not to say he is great, just good, but with alot of flaws obviously. Like he even though he assists their strikers goals, the amount of times he hogs the ball and goes for glory himself, is quite ridicolous, quit ineffective as a player due to this, even if he has the skillset to do damage (especially in counterattacks, can be very lethal). Being a team player is what he needs to be to be useful. Dont see him improving anytime soon.

When I say first XI, I mean if they have everyone fit.

He would be an excellent squad player and would be an improvement on the players they are playing in wide areas at the moment.

I have my reservations though, will he be willing to track back and defend? I don't think so, like Osman i see him as a free roaming forward. Personally i'll pass on him.

Fred whats your take on Shay Given?IMO he's one of the most underrated gk's in the epl & he would be a step up from Almunia if Arsenal do sign him.

He'd be a great signing for Arsenal. I've seen him play many many times for years now. I've seen him live a lot of times too and he's a top quality keeper. Newcastle's many shitty defenders over the years have made him look worse than he is but he has remained loyal to them so far. I think he might be finally getting sick of it though. He's said he's "considering his position."
He wouldn't be cup tied for the CL either.

I've said it before, he's the most underrated keeper in the EPL. Definitely one of the top keepers right now, and would be a considerable upgrade over Almunia. That being said, Almunia has been rather good lately, even covering for Gallas and the other defenders lapses of concentration. But still i'd take Shay Given in a heartbeat.

Very true but what do you think the chances of Arsenal signing him are?

None.

We don't have money to spend in January, and thats assuming Given wants to leave or Newcastle are willing to sell him, which if true, would mean he isn't going cheap. Arsene never spends big on keepers.

I don't agree with Shay Given being a step up from Almunia or VDS or Cech, may be Reina to some extent.
VDS is past it now, he's making way too much mistakes to be considered as a top keeper anymore. Almunia is decent at best, what are you talking about. Reina on the other hand is a top keeper and so is Cech, both being better than Given imo.

Given's got better reflexes but he doesn't have the height advantage that Almunia or VDS has, they have a better reach and give attackers less target to aim at, which is why I think Almunia or VDS are better.
You think they're better because they're taller?
Given is only 2 inches shorter than Almunia anyway.

Given, Cech, Friedel, Hart, Reina, James?
Its amazing how players change, james used to be a complete disastor at the beginning of he's career. Same goes to Rio ferdinand back in he's days with west ham (i think he broke the record for scoring own goals back then :D ).

But good for them to come that faar in their careers and for Rio to become a top defender.....

Both Rio and James problem was their low concentration levels, it was obvious that both were very good players on their day, but they needed to improve their concentration levels which they did.

Given is taller than people realise.

James is still worth a few howlers per season.

He has improved a lot, though.
