Chelsea suffer Villa Knight-mare
Zat Knight enjoyed a dream debut for Aston Villa as he opened the scoring and then helped keep a clean sheet in a shock 2-0 win over Chelsea at Villa Park.
Knight's header from a Gareth Barry corner just after half-time gave Villa the lead, and the hosts then defended superbly for the remainder of the game.
Gabriel Agbonlahor then put the icing on the win as he deflected home an Ashley Young shot two minutes from time.
To compound a miserable day for Jose Mourinho's side Didier Drogba hobbled off injured in stoppage time.
With Frank Lampard missing injured and Andriy Shevchenko once more left out of the Chelsea squad, Mourinho decided to go back to the 4-3-3 system that served him so well in recent seasons, with Juliano Belletti and Alex both given their first starts.
The first 20 minutes of the match was played at breakneck speed with chances at both ends.
Shaun Wright-Phillips was causing Villa all sorts or problems and Martin O'Neill's side were also having great difficultly defending Chelsea corners but the best early chance went to Villa.
It came when Young fed a ball in for Agbonlahor, the England Under-21 international then turned sharply and Petr Cech had to be very alert to bat the resulting close range effort away.
Then a pattern quickly began to emerge, one where Chelsea dominated in terms of possession but struggled to create chances.
The situation was made all the graver for the Blues when they went behind with just two minutes played in the second-half, as Young curled in a shot that Cech tipped over.
From the resulting corner, Knight powered home a header for his boyhood heroes which found its way into the net despite Ashley Cole's best efforts to clear it off the line.
Chelsea brought on Claudio Pizarro, Joe Cole, and Salomon Kalou in a bid to change things and for most of the remainder of the match Chelsea were camped in the Villa half.
However, superb defending from the tall Villa backline ensured that Scott Carson didn't have much to do in regards to making saves.
Villa then hit Chelsea on the break for a final sucker punch two minutes from time, as Young embarked on a magnificent run down the left-wing, he then cut inside and unleashed a powerful shot that Agbonlahor instinctively deflected into the net.
Joe Cole hit the post for Chelsea in stoppage time but that effort, and the sight of Drogba being helped off just before the final whistle, summed up their miserable afternoon.
