That's what happens when you play a midfield full of athletic, trigger happy, headless chickens.

Rio can take some credit from last night, Woodgate still looks a little rusty but was decent. Micah Richards showed what it is about when he came on and that was it really.

Rubbish, but not unexpected. Maybe people will realise that Sven wasn't as bad as he was made out to be now.

I don't hold Sven Goran Eriksson with high esteem, but the man does have respectable track-record managing teams like Roma, Samp, and Lazio. Moreover, if Sven Goran Eirksson is accountable for all those failures in major competitions for England, where was Steve McLaren? I have no doubt in my mind McLaren is extremely underqualified, and incompetent for a big role that England NT manager is.

On yesterday's match, I thought Jonathan Woodgate did pretty well. He kept David Villa under-control most of the match and being assigned a touch job of marking Spaniard. But such is the quality in the international game, one period of sloppy mistake can cost you dear. Nonetheless, as you said midfield is the real problem. England just simply doesn't have the guile in the middle of the park without J.Cole IMO. Moreover, the problem goes beyond individual quality, as it is evident from watching them, they are not used to simple pass and movement culture that pervades throughout the world.

I havent seen too much of Villa at Valencia. With his goal record,i was expecting him to be a Trezeguet like goal poacher who stays near/inside the penalty box and doesnt add anyting else to the team other than goals. It was refreshingly good to see Villa not stay in one place, but move around on the pitch and even move on the wings occasionaly. And if im not mistaken,it was his cross that Spain got their goal from.,I like the way Villa plays.

Oh there is no doubt Villa is a very good player. He worked his ass off for the team. His extremely mobile with excellent off the ball movement, which enable him to play in variety of ways. But he still hasn't convinced me in terms of technical ability. I am not quite convinced he is as good as Raul in the latter's prime, or Zlatan, Ronaldo, Messi, Kaka's class. But top class nonetheless, especially considering Morientes Trezeguet like work-rate, and lack of service from midfield. It is easy to see why Villa gets so many goals. Just Imagine Adriano having that movement - He will put in 35 goals a season.

Very True. He's a tireless,no nonsense player. I think he can do without the technical aspect. He'd become phenomenal if he can add that flashiness that the likes of Messi and Kaka have to his game, but even without it,he's amazing. He's pretty hot property right now.It would be interesting to see if he gets tempted into a move to a bigger club than Valencia in the summer.Im sure that huge bids would be lined up for him.

the English media ran sven to the ground, they didnt even let him scratch his head without them commenting. They did that in the past and will do it in the future and that will always be their biggest problem.

Sven is a much better manager than Big Mac, I dont think Mac comes anywhere near sven.Although i still question some of ericksson's decisions.

It was fantastic to see Onyewu help thwart Pool today, along with Dempsey and company looking decent for Fulham. Hopefully all these players will continue to receive the starting nod, especially Clint from Coleman because the Deuce is simply sickness.

Yeah I rate him very very high. He reminds me a lot of Larsson, got the same smartness on the pitch. Always there in the penalty area when that ball comes and always helps getting the ball in there. Though his technique is far superior to Larsson. To me he is the absolute key player of Valencia and does more for his team imo then Ronaldinho, Kaká and Lampard etc do for their teams. I will be very dissapointed if he ends his career without at least one golden ball at his feet if he continues like this.

Arsenal-Wigan,what a match. The best match of the weekend IMO.I loved the way Wigan were brave enough to attack Arsenal in the first half, and had it not been for Heskey's usual finishing foots,Wigan might have gotten much more out of the game than a defeat.I hear people say that Anfield is an intimidating place to play at,but the Emirates stadium isnt far behind. The atmosphere there today was brilliant.

During the Half Time report the experts said that Wigan have been ahead in a match 16 times this season, and they've eventually went on to lose16 points in those games.Arsenal on the other hand have been behind 8 times this season, and they've collected 14 points from those games.

Some of Arsenal's buildups in the first half were sublime.Classy passing around the box only to be undone by some rather uncharecteristic fininshing by Henry. It was a great game to watch nevertheless.Wigan do play with a lot of heart, and i love that then in them.

Wigan Athletic boss Paul Jewell was left fuming with referee Phil Dowd and his assistants following Sunday's 2-1 defeat at Arsenal.

The Latics cruelly came away with nothing from their Super Sunday trip to Emirates Stadium, as a Fitz Hall own-goal and a headed strike by Tomas Rosicky cancelled out Denny Landzaat's fine first-half finish.

The former Bradford City and Sheffield Wednesday manager let his feelings known to Dowd at the final whistle, as he felt a number decisions went against Wigan in the late stages.

Jewell was left bemused as to why Emile Heskey was not rewarded a penalty late on in the game, and why Latics midfielder Josip Skoko was not allowed back on to the pitch after receiving treatment for an injury.

He was further angered when Mathieu Flamini looked to be offside in the build-up to Arsenal's equaliser.

"I thought we should have had a penalty that hopefully would have made it 2-0," a fuming Jewell told Sky Sports.

"One of our players gets a free-kick and treatment soon after that, and Dowd doesn't let him back on for whatever reason.

"Then it looks like it might be offside for the cross for the goal.

"I think I'm in trouble because I told him one or two things (after the game), but these (officials) make decisions like that and will have another game next week.

"I don't like blaming referees because they have difficult job - I understand that.

"But why is our player not allowed back on the pitch after he's received treatment? Even the fourth official doesn't understand why.

"If they don't understand each other, then we've got no chance."

Jewell was convinced Flamini had pulled Heskey back for a penalty before The Gunners turned the game around.

"It's a penalty, he's put his hand on his shoulder," insists Jewell. "Why would Emile want to go down when he's through on goal?

"The problem with some officials is that they don't understand the game, and maybe they don't know what a penalty is.

"Today, he's (Dowd) cost us the points I think."

Jewell later told the written press that he would report Dowd regarding the referee's conduct towards his players.

"I have only blamed referees three times this season, and he (Dowd) has been in charge every time," Jewell said.

"He is telling our players to F-off and stuff, which I do not mind because it is a man's game - but then he is telling me that I will be sent into the stands for having a go at him. It cannot all be one-way.

"If he wants to take my conduct to the authorities, then I will take his language to my players to the authorities as well.

"I am sure I will have to explain my comments to the Football Association - but if I do, I will just show them a video of the game.

"A leading Premiership manager told me that Dowd was the worst referee in the league - I am not saying that, but it was there for all to see today.

"He denied us a stone-wall penalty and did not give us two penalties at Arsenal last season, so there must be something in his Premier League contract about not giving us decisions against Arsenal.

"His only consistency is his inconsistency and I am gutted for the players.

"Referees just do not realise the significance of football matches.

"I think some of them consider it to be more of a hobby and they do not take it as seriously as we do as managers and players.

"I just do not understand where they are coming from."

Yes he was; worse refereeing display I have seen all season and that is saying something.

Yeh, it was a good game. Baines was really impressive.
He's been top class all season and yet when it comes time to choose an england squad he is overlooked for Phil Neville.

As to the game, I imagine it was great from a neutral perspective. Very open and energetic. From my point of view I have reservations about how easily we let Wigan open us up but it was a good fight back.

Flamini's foul on Heskey was a sending off and penalty. He was also offside on the first goal, but in my opinion Adebayor was onside for his excellent finish which was disallowed moments earlier so that evened it out.

Lehmann continues to be a nutter and what he did towards the end had me in stitches when I saw it again on the highlights (as I couldn't see it in the stadium).
