That's not really what he says. He's arguing that before England complains about treatment of black players in other countries, the need to sort things in England first. Which is a valid point. Also, he addresses the fact that racism is a societal issue that needs be dealt with on a macro level rather than just reacting when footballers are abused in far off lands.

It's a pretty good article for a former footballer.
perhaps I read it 'wrongly', will give it another read to see if perhaps I skipped over something or took it the wrong way

You'll never end racism until people stop judging by appearance. This goes beyond racism and is a wider issue.

What he says is exactly true, if we want to get to the point we are all racist as we have pre-conceived and ignorant ideas of people and cultures, what they are, what they do and what they cannot do. Multiculturalism changes that slowly, but en masse people are far too secular.

John Barnes, I will never take anything he says serisouly, since he said the reason he doesn't get Prem manager jobs is because he is black.......nothing to do with the mess he made of Celtic.....!

I agree that he is clueless about management, and if he really is using that as an excuse then all the funnier, but he does make some good points on the wider issue.

I also happen to think that the idea of having black applicant quotas (Rooney rule) in the English game is a little ridiculous at this stage. If a coach is good enough or wants it enough they will get a role. If a chairman really is racist or has ignorant ideas then a 25% quota is going to make little difference to who he appoints in the job, it is just a waste of time for him and the black applicants going through that process.

The long and short of it these days is that a lot of black footballers retire and leave the game because they have other interests, the figures are there to read, there are few black coaches going for their qualifications and badges. You don't just have to sell it to white chairman, it seems they have to sell it to black retired footballers. Let's face it, players earn so much money now they can go and do whatever they want when they retire, they can do absolutely nothing if they choose.

He also backed Suarez in the Evra 'War', so makes alot of what he says completely irrelivant.

His baking of LFC's best player, nothing to do with him still being an Employee of that club......!

"Around 20% of professional footballers come from the black and ethnic minority communities, yet from the 1,300 or coaches who hold a UEFA B licence or higher, the number is only 4.8%. At governing body level"

So if that stat is anything to go by, given there are 92 league clubs, you'd expect there to be 4.4 managers from ethnic minorities in English football.

I believe there are 5 thus far, so it's kinda what you'd expect isn't it?

Pretty much this. I can go on & on about how much I hate racism (and I do) but the truth is that's probably the default for almost everyone whether they want to admit it or not. It's just a matter of who can push those thoughts aside & "train" themselves otherwise.
