I disagree, we are significantly improved!
We have never been so powerful in the past decade to say the least!
Up untill now we had some striking weaknesses that wouldnt allow us to be competitive, the lack of depth in our CB trio was one, because if we were to play a game without any of those 3 missing out from injury or suspension, we were not solid enough in the back.
And our biggest weakness was our inability to convert our scoring chances due to the lack of a prolific finisher who could do that with consistency.
Our midfield was our strength because they had no choice but to overperform and fill the gaps, now they will only have to do their jobs and this is an easy task for someone like Pjanic, may not have the potential to reach world vlass level like Pogba, but here and now there isnt much difference among them considering the end result.
What we lost with Pogba is only future potential.
Our coach thrives on rotation and he will take a maximum advantage of Benatia, Pjanic and Higuain, one man in every line is far more important than the current difference among Pogba and Pjanic.
Cuadrado has been our mvp imho even with Pogba here and i am worried more about Alvez being a downgrade, comparing to him, if we get him back, we will be unstoppable!
And as for the Pirlo-Vidal-Tevez era of 2 years ago, yes those 3 had more material than anything we got now, like Pjanic-Khedira and Higuain, but they were not playing alone, they had to rely on weaker players around them, Benatia, Sandro, Dani and Dybala will be a considerable help to our current starters, we are better than before, but is this enough to secure the CL?
Of course not! Yet this is the first time that we actually have a realistic chance for it! The CL is a cup more often than not, the cup is not won by the best, but by someone just good enough and here we are now!

IF, and that's a big if. Allegri said he might need 2 new additions in midfield, and depending on who those additions are, and the sales of Hernanes, Zaza, and Pereyra, it is difficult to give an accurate assessment of the mercato. As for easily compensated, I strongly disagree. Losing Vidal last year, and Pogba this year is a major blow for any team, as you can't compensate that kind of energy, dynamism, tenacity, physical presence, and intimidation factor, and don't even get me started on the intangibles. The midfield will be a downgrade regardless of who we bring in (unless we resign Vidal and sign Verratti

I agree that our midfield is weaker. Pogba also had great physicality and stamina. As it stands today though, the upgrade to our attack is significant. When I looked our starting line-up last year the strength was midfield but the weakness was always the center forward. Yes Morata was great in some champions league matches but he was not a regular goal scorer and while Mandzukic was a great team player he just wasn't banging in the goals regularly enough. If Higuain even performs at 80% of what he did last year, then its a huge upgrade. Don't underestimate Alves as well. The guy frequently puts in great crosses and creates a lot of goal scoring opportunities.
If we bring back Cuadrado and we get a decent reliable defensive mid then I would give this Mercato a 9 out of 10 especially when you also take into consideration that financially, it was not taxing at all.

Khedira, Marchisio and Asamoah are all somewhat questionable in terms of performance, fitness and form. And no one should be surprised if all three are out with injuries simultaneously. Note: that I'm a big fan of all three as footballers, and I actually think that an in-form and injury-free Khedira is world class (highly underrated imo).
But this leaves us with Pjanicheart, Hernanes, Lemina, Sturaro, Marrone (?) and Pereyra (?). That's an appalling midfield.
Pogba will perform his best football then next five years (that's a huge loss transfer fee excluded), while besides Pjanic and Lemina our midfielders have all been at their best or currently at it.
We need at least one midfielder that matches the quality of Marchisio and Khedira. Whether it's a holding/defensive midfielder or a box-box, heck even an attacking midfielder, isn't all that important, since we can adapt with the players we got.
With the huge signing of Fatso, it seems rather foolish if we don't go for CL-glory this year and for that; we do need an european top class midfielder.
Khedira, Marchisio and Asamoah are all somewhat questionable in terms of performance, fitness and form. And no one should be surprised if all three are out with injuries simultaneously. Note: that I'm a big fan of all three as footballers, and I actually think that an in-form and injury-free Khedira is world class (highly underrated imo).

Speaking of financials take a look at the delta. I am incremental costs as Annual amortization (transfer fee divided by years of contract) + gross wages. Incremental savings as (gains/loss on sale of transfer fee vs amortized book value) + savings on amortization + gross wages saved.
So lets look at the ones coming in (additional annual expenses):
Alves = 7m (just gross wages)
Benatia = 9m (loan fee + gross wages)
Pjanic = 15.5m (amortization + gross wages)
Pjaca = 8.5m (amortization + gross wages)
Higuain = 33m (amortization + gross wages)
Cuadrado = 2.5m (was already paying his wages last year so just the loan fee of 4m vs 1.5m)
Defenisve Mid? = 15m (assume 35m, 5yr contract with wages of 4m NET)

Zaza = 17m (including 9m on gain on amortized value assuming 25m + amortization and wage savings)

Hernanes = 9m (including 2m loss on amortized value + amortization and wage savings)
Coman = 21m (purely gain on sale given he was acquired at zero cost)
