Im not going to pretend like I know their discography, but the pieces I've listened to prompts me to think of yuppies instantly. That might be the opposite of what they're all about, but I can't get over that mental image.

Oh wow, really? As a rule, in the 80s, I feel they're an antidote to yuppies. They did have an early pop hit in Just Can't Get Enough, which is quite funny to listen to given the rest of their discography, but it's more irony than anything.
As I said, I might very well be wrong . I really don't know enough about them to have an intelligent discussion. I hate it when you call out a piece of trolling with serious mode :undecide:
Definitely not yuppies. In fact, "Black Celebration" is a reference to working class culture in England; drinking away your sorrows after a hard day of labour etc. And many, many of their songs contain themes such as that.
The guys themselves are from Essex and used to be very poor.
And about Just Can't Get Enough, Vince Clarke wrote that, before the "real" Depeche Mode unfolded. The guys that were to carry on Depeche Mode didn't write any material on that first (incredibly weird) synthpop record.
