MANCHESTER, England (AFP) - - Arsene Wenger could be facing a desperate battle to keep star striker Emmanuel Adebayor at Arsenal after the Togo international enhanced his growing reputation by helping the Gunners pull clear at the top of the Premier League.

Adebayor helped himself to a brace of goals as Arsenal ended Manchester City's unbeaten home record with a 3-1 win on Saturday.

It was a particularly significant win as Manchester United were held by Tottenham later in the day and Adebayor deserved the headlines after a polished display that underlined why he is rapidly becoming one of the most talked about and sought-after forwards in European football.

Wenger heaped praise on Adebayor, but didn't help himself when suggesting the 23-year-old has filled the void left by Thierry Henry's departure to Barcelona last year.

Several of the continent's leading clubs, including Real Madrid, Juventus and AC Milan are known to be keeping close tabs on the progress of the lanky forward with a view to making a bid for him in the summer.

It remains to be seen whether or Adebayor wishes to pledge his long term future to the London club, but it is a safe assumption that Wenger will be encouraging his board of directors to tie his leading goalscorer down to a new and improved long-term contract.

Should a European rival table a multi-million pound bid come the end of the season, Arsenal might find themselves in a difficult position.

As Wenger proved with Henry when selling him to Barcelona for 16 million pounds, every player has their price irrespective of how important they are to the club.

Wenger paid seven million to sign Adebayor from Monaco two years ago and the price was questioned at the time.

Adebayor has flourished this season, however, scoring 21 goals, including eleven in his last eight games, to suggest Wenger landed himself a bargain.

Adebayor is the only player capable of keeping pace with United's Cristiano Ronaldo in the scoring charts this season and Wenger admits he is maturing into a class act.

Wenger said: "At the moment I'm grateful for every game that he plays in and the fact he's still at home and not away with the African Nations Cup (because Togo did not qualify).

"I have a lot of respect for Ronaldo, but I'm happy with the players I've got. Ronaldo is more of a winger while Adebayor is a real centre forward.

"He's made a big, big improvement this year and he is remarkably consistent. He made a big impact on two very good centrebacks and had a big influence on us winning the game.

"He's more composed in front of goal now. He wasn't like that when he first came to the club. The changes in his game have been tremendous.

"It's not important that he finishes top scorer (in the Premiership). It's more important that the team wins.

"He's a generous type of guy. He has big stamina, strength and power and just loves to play. Thierry Henry is a world class player and we don't forget him, but to fill the void left by him is fantastic."

City boss Sven Goran Eriksson admitted his side had no answer to Adebayor's talents and he added: "He suits Arsenal's style of play well and he is difficult to deal with. You can see he is a very talented player who has a massive future in the game. He took his goals well but there is a more to his game than just that."

Yeah, Arsenal is currently in better shape than our side and will be a great team for years to come. In reality Arsenal is one of the top three sides in football nowadays.

Good player, but I dont like his attitude. Any1 remember his fit vs Chelsea, or the incident with his own teammate. Also, he caused trouble with NT over compensation, amongst other things. Playing for your country should be enough motivation.

It doesn't matter anyways, as Arsenal wont sell him, and I doubt he would want to sign with Juve.

That shit with Togo was absolutely pathetic. I lost a lot of respect for him after that crap.

I don't think he'll succeed away from Wenger. He's in the right place under the right coach. He'd flop elsewhere.

Couldnt have put it better myself..He fits our system like a glove..Wenger knows how to use him..

Its kind of funny how after one good season he gets rated so highly and big teams like Juve and Real get linked to him..Lets not forget that Beattie scored 24 goals a season once.. So until he proves himself in more than one season, i personally wont jump on the Adebayor bandwagon. Not to mention, he still hasnt scored a single goal in the CL ever since he's joined us.

Not taking anything away from him though..he's been vital for us this season and i hope he continues this way.

I actually think he is a good player with lots of potential and he could be intresting in Juve shirt but I don`t think that a move on this part of time of his career would do him good... but I could also be wrong...

Italian duo chasing Adebayor

The agent of Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor has insisted the Gunners could sell the Togolese international to an Italian club this summer.

Vincenzo Morabito believes both Milan and Juventus are interested in the signature of the 24-year-old hitman who has scored 27 goals so far in 2007-08.

“He is a centre-forward of stature and has had a great season,” eulogised Morabito. “He is the right investment for the future.

“The Rossoneri have looked at him as have the Bianconeri. He is a youngster with age on his side with respect to Didier Drogba.”

A poor season both at home and abroad has led to calls for a complete overhaul of the playing staff at Milanello.

Milan have struggled in the final third of the pitch throughout the current campaign and would like a partner for Alexandre Pato.

Juventus, linked heavily with Palermo’s Amauri, are also thought to be looking to add a world class striker to their ranks in preparation for their return to Champions League football next term.

Adebayor only joined Arsenal in January 2006 and has become a pivotal point in Coach Arsene Wenger’s plans since the departure of Thierry Henry to Barcelona last summer.

Morabito, who represents Rossoneri goalkeeper Christian Abbiati, currently on-loan at Atletico Madrid, also had something to say about Milan’s problems between the sticks.

“The intention on the part of Milan seems to be that of offering Abbiati another year on his contract, but it’s a situation that needs to be evaluated carefully because with the continued presence of Dida and Zeljko Kalac it doesn’t make sense.

“If one of them were to leave it would be an opportunity for Abbiati to play more.”

Dida has played little since January when he made a series of mistakes in Milan’s 2-1 loss to Inter and is believed to be on his way to Lyon.
