I think it’s easy to assume a rich dude’s house should be insured and have some sort of security. So most likely he was prepared. But as Lion noted, alarms can be disabled. It’s sad that this happens so often in Italy though.

If my house got broken into I know I’d be sleeping with one eye open for a very long time.

And also items stolen can have sentimental value. Maybe something there cannot be replaced because it’s a gift from a dead relative or a one of a kind gift. You can’t replace those

Even with those the knowledge that your home was broken into can be mentally scarring. When you sleep at night your thoughts are going to be what if they break in while I’m sleeping? When your away your thoughts are going to be what if I come to a broken in house again?
