And yet it doesn't justify Douglas Costa's ridiculous reaction, especially as it was he who scythed down Di Francesco in reaction to a minimal contact between the two at the other end.

This. Allegri just mentioned the same in his post-match interview. That Sassuolo was trying to provoke at the end when we started trying to dribble through their team, but it doesn't justify Costa's reaction in the slightest.
