Whether or not they make the EL seems to make little difference. Two years ago they convinced themselves that not reaching EL was a good thing and that they'd "do a Juve" and have a strong year in the league without international distractions. They came in 5th with -42 from the top. So yeah, they're shit and will perform accordingly no matter what competition or how many of them they play in.
