Capello Blasts Fifa Rankings

AS Roma coach Fabio Capello, who is touring Mexico with his club, has taken a swipe at the Fifa World Rankings system.

"It is not credible," he said. "The true pointer of the values of the national sides is the World Cup. There you understand who is the strongest. We take Mexico, in the classifications they are fifth but with all the respect I cannot believe that they play a soccer better than England, Italy, Turkey, Germany and Argentina. Italy, for example, are only found at 14th place, but compared to the other teams, they play less."

AS Roma's Late Chokes Continue

AS Roma once again failed to hold onto a one goal lead in this pre-season.

Back in July Capello's side were denied a win against German side Hannover five minutes from time, while last night Mexican side Necaxa evened the score with six minutes to go through an Espinoza strike.

Roma had taken the lead during the first half of play through their most on-form player of the moment, Antonio Cassano.

Ten minutes earlier skipper Francesco Totti missed a spot attempt.

In the second half the game became very 'unfriendly' as both sides saw two of their players sent off.

Roma's bad boys were Dellas and Samuel.

Roma and Napoli finances investigated

A new scandal has rocked the Italian football world as Roma and Napoli’s finances are under investigation.

All clubs in Serie A, B and C must present proof of their financial stability to the COVISOC committee in order to register for the new season.

Roma and Napoli failed a first inspection, but were registered several days later on appeal thanks to papers proving a small bank – Sbc - was ready to cover their debts.

However, it later emerged that Sbc was a very small company and their Board of Directors was entirely unaware of the transactions.

“Those papers were falsified and the signature of our former administrator was also a fake,” insisted President of Sbc Franco Jommi.

Further investigations found that Sbc’s name was on guarantor papers for Cosenza, Spal and the recently defunct basketball club Virtus Bologna.

There is the risk that Roma and Napoli will be thrown out of their respective divisions, but that seems highly unlikely as the clubs claim they were mislead.

“A member of the Covisoc committee told me to go through Sbc to get guarantor papers,” explained Roma patron Franco Sensi.

“We have been wronged and will take legal action to discover who is behind this fraud.”

The thought that a member of the Covisoc – who check all the accounts of football clubs before the new season and doomed Fiorentina to bankruptcy – was an integral part of a fraud is sending shockwaves through the Italian sport world.

The news is particularly tough to take, as this week legendary club Virtus Bologna, known affectionately as the Juventus of basketball, was declared bankrupt.

Roma End Mexican Tour With Another Draw

AS Roma clinched their third consecutive 1-1 draw last night, in what was the last match of their American experience.

This time the Giallorossi's sharing of spoils occurred against Monterry.

Francesco Totti opened the scoring on 15 minutes, but further on in the first half the Mexican side evened things through a Fernandez strike.

Earler this week the Serie A side battled to a 1-1 draws against Atletico Madrid and Necaxa respectively.

Roma financial row escalates

The Covisoc has denied Roma’s claims they were forced into irregular moves to solve their financial worries.

The Giallorossi stated in Friday’s press conference that they were the “victims of extortion” when providing false paperwork to prove their financial stability.

“We reject the grave accusations against us and reiterate these were utterly without foundation,” read a statement by the Covisoc committee.

Director of Sport Franco Baldini had suggested a member of the Covisoc told Roma they must go through finance company Sbc if they were to register for the Serie A season.

“Roma were never forced into anything,” continued the statement. “We merely requested the guarantees that every club must provide before it can enter a campaign.”

The situation is increasingly complex. Roma and Napoli have now begun legal action against “whoever orchestrated this fraud.”

Sbc maintain they are also the victims of fraud, as the signatures on their paperwork were falsified.

Chivu transfer to collapse?

There are reports that Roma’s financial woes could see Ajax pull out of their deal for Christian Chivu.

The defender was signed from the Dutch club this summer for around £12m, but only £2m has been handed over at this point.

It is suggested on Italian website Tgcom.it that the guarantee papers for the remaining sum have not been completed, so Chivu is still not eligible to play in an official match.

The Giallorossi maintain that the paperwork has been printed up by Capitalia, but according to these reports the bank denies it has guaranteed payment.

This is a further blow to Roma’s already delicate financial situation, as the club is one of several under investigation for providing false paperwork to prove its stability.

The FIGC looks set to rule that Roma, Napoli and others were unaware of the irregularities and are to be given a further twelve days to provide accurate guarantees.

This nonetheless leaves £5m of uncovered debt plus the £10m for Chivu’s transfer to be found by the August 27 deadline.

Roma have until August 30 to complete Chivu's transfer and register the player for their opening Serie A match against Udinese.
