i don't think that diego is necessarily unhappy with his position. the problem is he does see that the team does not work "for him" like it was in bremen.
with work for him, i do not mean to say, that they should relieve him of all defensive duties. the attacking game we have is non-existent. we know diego is a good dribbler, but when he does have to dribble apart two players constantly to exchange passes with a teammate, then there is something terribly wrong.
no one has the stamina to constantly bypass to opponents before being able to pass the ball to a teammate. so we see that for diego to actually hold and excell in his position we need to get two things working:
first: give the ball to diego with an easy pass. by easy pass i mean it should be a pass he can easily trap and convert into other moves. don't play the ball high to him and don't play those fucking 50/50 balls where diego has the same chance of getting it like his opponent. diego does make enough runs to make himself available.
if we do not achieve this, than diego (like any other player that gives a fuck) will drop deeper to receive the passes which will fuck up our play. diego has the desire to get the ball, so he goes way beyond the halfway line and gets the ball on our own box, but the problem is ... who is in front of him to exchange quick passes for a counter ? there are most of the time only two players... one target man that is to far away for a quick one-two to advance towards the opponents goal and one second striker (in this case del piero). so our whole attack consists of 3 players. One (diego) has the ball and all the opponent has to do is tightly mark two of our players (trez and alex against 4 of their defenders) to completely bring our attack to halt and force diego dribble/keep possession until he sees someone he can play the ball to. this is the scenario when nobody does make runs/themselves available for a pass... and that is the second thing
second: as long as diego has to wait for others to make a run before he can pass to them, the opponent will have enough time to mark the players that make runs if our players do only start making runs when diego already has the ball you can cut it. its too late. but imagine in the above mentioned situation where diego got the ball and only alex and trez in front, imagine both of our full backs making runs on either wing. this will force their fullbacks to track back and no we have a situation where their fullbacks mark our fullbacks and their centrebacks mark our two strikers. the play is spread because their fullbacks can not help mark alex and trez because they have a direct opponent to mark and diego has way more space in the middle to go past one player (their defensive midfield) and than run at their defense.
in this scenario we have a 5 against 4 counter attack with diego dribbling towards the goal. this will result in one player stopping marking his men and running towards diego to disposses him which leaves the now unmarked striker in a favourable position to receive the pass or a through ball.
yes i know, this is a highly theoretical approach/description, but it is just how it often works (only speaking from the amateur-level i wittnessed right now).
key point is: give the ball to diego without him having to compete for it or loose energy in hopeless "throwing his body in there" (like amauri has to often do) so diego has more energy for what we like him to do.
if we achieve that, then he would not have to drop that deep and they distance he has to run until the opponents goal is shortend.
and "make runs so diego can either play easy one touch passes to his teammates or have more room to dribble because making runs results in the opponents player being busy marking/covering that runs"
on another note: we all remember the football udinese played last year. d'agostino did great there. that was all down to many players making runs so he has more space and possibilities for direct passes (which does speed up the play).
d'agostino can not dribble as good as diego and you can bet your ass, that d'agostino would today with our team got totally owned because he does not know whom to play the ball to.
a player who has played much football always has his own theories and that will apply to diego too. if he thinks ciros case is hopeless because he does not adjust and listen to others, than he surely would be happy to get any other coach.
it's like everywhere else.
i try to give a simple example. you work on a machine with some metals and after using the machine on the metal you can sell the product. no you spot that every now and then the machine will destroy your working material rendering the product not sellable and so decreasing productivity.
if it is, because the guy who delivers the metal to you does something wrong with it, you will either tell this guy or your supervisor. what if the supervisor just says "no, its all good like this. we keep on like this or just let the delivery guy come more often because of the faulty products that appear from time to time"
what would you do ? it is the supervisors responsibility to maintain certain results and standards. you can tell him once how to increase rentability, you can tell him twice ... but if the supervisor is a stubborn retard than you will laugh next time the machine will make crap out of the metal and think to yourself "i told you so, mr supersmart supervisor". if i was in that position perhaps i would even force more faulty products to let the results fall back onto the supervisor and him probably get sacked.
just because diego is allowed much on the field, does not necessarily make him happy.
it's like i give you a elephant to ride and you are totally happy, but then i tell you, you may only ride him in the china shop
perhaps it was a smile of frustration?
many people smile whe they are frustrated or angry. It helps ease the stress
who can blame him for being angry when he obviously does run his ass off to help the team, but it is all hopeless and we still concede many goals and loose. i think diego can leave the pitch with his head held high.
its no wonder he misplaced some passes to the end, when he has to constantly fight for balls and defend (which should not be his task anyways).
if you give your all on the pitch you will not even have enough power to scream/yell at your teammates. had that once, and it sounded like that rocky balboa "aaaadriaaaaan" scream, because i was so exhausted
