Why would we change it for him and not for Giovinco? They essentially play the same position... and Giovinco is free.

i think ranieri perfers to moulding giovinco as dp's heir
So rather than playing him in a midfield role, wait 5 years for DP to retire and let him take his place? That doesn't make sense.

Diego is a bit better than Giovinco at defending, so Ranieri is more willing to play Diego in midfield.

For the avoidance of doubt, I'm highly sceptical as to whether Ranieri changed his mind or whether Diego will join.

I won't pretend that I've seen a lot of Diego but when I have he didn't do much defending. He may be more physically capable of defending than Giovinco, but Giovinco does a surprising amount of tracking back, more than I've seen from Diego.

What doesn't make sense? Del Piero is Juve's captain and he's staying with us. Giovinco is his substitute and he's staying with us. It's that simple and if you don't like it, deal with it. It's staying like that.

MG, I think that extra physicality is the key to why Ranieri will be willing to change to incorporate Diego in midfield, but not Giovinco.

To be honest (don't shot me I'm only the piano player) I don't see much between them. I hope I am wrong -unlikely- neither is going to be on lips for too long.

In other words, neither is that good, Gio could make the improvement, but I don't feel it.

What doesn't make sense is that Ranieri would want Diego =but doesn't want to play Giovinco in a midfield position because of the defensive sacrfices, while they play the same position. I was not trying to rush DP to the retirement home, or pimp Giovinco to Arsenal. I was merely trying to point out that Ranieri was so against using little Gio as a midfielder, he is willing to make him "Del Piero's heir" even if he has to wait till Gio is 27 years old.

In short, I don't think Ranieri would okay a Diego-type player. I'm expecting a Zhirkov type player and I hope he is as good as everyone says.

I'm not one hundred percent sure that Ranieri has actually given the Diego deal the "go ahead". But as you can tell Ranieri does not see Giovinco as a left midfielder, but more as a support striker or even as "Del Piero's heir". I believeno matter what happens or who we buy, unless we get rid of Ranieri or if Ranieri leaves, Giovinco shall always be last choice to play in that left midfield role.

i guess we could probably change our formation. but to what?

this maybe?

--------Amauri/trez-------
---gio/Dp?------------diego-
-marchisio-------sissoko--
-----------zanetti---------

although i doubt it. the thing i believe Giovinco will have to wait for DP to begin slowing down, not that i want him to but it is inevitable. Giovinco is a great talent and i can understand why M.G. is frustrated as i would also like Giovinco to play on the left.

this brings me to my other possible formation, but it may too attacking.

del piero/iaq-----amauri/trez

-------------giovinco----------
diego----------------------camo
-----------zanetti/sisso?--------

i have my doubts on where hes gonna fit in too.

the 2nd formation XsemprejuveX is very attacking although it looks very tempting hehee.

but then i rather we sign a pure winger then bring in diego.

One guy from j1897 saw Diego on some beach and asked him if he wants to come to Juve because there's some many news linking us with him and he said he'd come.
It was me who asked... Diego also said that he is obligated to join Juve because of BD too.
