Category: General

Didier Deschamps began Friday’s press conference with a word about the players available for the Bianconeri’s hotly anticipated first home game of the season. “Zebina is not yet back to full fitness and Tudor and Legrottaglie will also need more time. The rest of the squad will be available to play against Vicenza, including Zanetti and Trezeguet, although not everyone is at the same physical level. As a coach you want everyone to be fit, even if that leaves some difficult choices when it comes to deciding the starting line up”.
One of those choices will be the inclusion of Matteo Paro in midfield. “He’s ready to play, as I’ve said throughout the summer. Even though he’s young, he should feel entitled to a first team place, he has the quality”.
The head coach is aware of just how important the game against Vicenza is to the Bianconeri’s season. “We know we cannot afford to make mistakes in any game but three points are essential when Juve are playing at home. Of course there’s pressure but that’s normal, we need to win. The stadium? It looks great, and the pitch is in good condition even after the heavy rain we’ve had over the last few days”.
Talk moved on to the lessons learned from the draw against Rimini. “We had a taste of what we can expect all season. You can talk as much as you like about what we do and don’t need to do this year, but the reality of Serie B only becomes clear when you experience it first hand. After Saturday, the players know what they have to do”.
The team’s build up to the clash with Vicenza has been encouraging. “With more players back we’ve been able to carry out important work together all week. The players have had more time to get to know each other and we’ve been working on all aspects of our game, both physical and tactical”.
Deschamps knows how important maintaining a strong group will be to Juve’s success this season. “You can never rely on eleven players. We’re counting on the whole group this season, whether that’s 15 players or 30. You can’t expect the same eleven players to turn out for three games a week, and besides, if you pick the same team every time, those left out will begin to get restless. As far as I’m concerned, I will pick the most competitive team to start the game, the team I believe are most capable of winning”.
With the question of international call-ups disrupting his team’s Serie B campaign, a competitive squad will be even more important to the Frenchman over the coming weeks and months. “It is certainly a problem which we are hoping to resolve. The international calendar clashes with three or four of our most important games, including those against Napoli and Brescia. We’re hoping we can postpone those matches but we’ll have to see what happens as we are the only team this problem applies to. In the worst case scenario, we’ll just have to deal with it and pick a less experienced team”.
Deschamps is well-informed on the threat Vicenza will pose on Saturday. “They’re a team who suffered last season, saving themselves from relegation right at the death. They also suffered against Genoa in the first half last week but came back strong in the second. They are a good side overall, particularly on the flanks where Raimondi and Sgrigna can cause problems. There won’t be any easy games this season, as our opposition will always raise their game when they’re playing Juventus. I’m not sure Rimini will play as they did against us this weekend, but that’s normal and we have to get used to playing against highly motivated teams who won’t be giving anything away”.

Source: Juventus.com
