DP should seriously take a pay cut. If his problem is with the length of the contract that's fine but I don't see why a player his age and man with his riches should be fussing about wages, even if he is a legend.

I know there are some player fans who think we should grant their favorite player all the riches of Vatican City and that would be great. But I don't want to see that. A club has to be fiscally responsible, and last I checked Del Piero played for Juventus -- not the other way around.
But sometimes as a "thank you" a job is "manufactured" by a football club. The values of having a high profile manager can pay handsome dividends. Of course the guy in question would have to be capable of combining business sense with the ability to spot talent. DP could certainly manage the latter, but to do the former he'd have to understudy one of the existing board until such time as he was considered worthy of being made head of a particular department. Which is where your objection stands up. Is it worth creating "jobs for the boys?"

Addition: I thought it was understood I'm talking about the "office" job Alex wants with the club when he hangs up his boots...

don't be ridiculous, nobody questions his ability and what means for Juve but these are only negotiations, they will sort it out. The board has a business to run and you can't afford to be guided by sentiments. Juventus will always be bigger then a player.
Del Piero on the other hand wants to get as much out of the deal as possible, this could be his last contract and he knows that.
I'm sure they will find a deal but all this quarrel is part of the game these days.
Don't let your sentiments cloud your judgement because it is DP.

I was talking about the "office" job DP wants with the club after he retires from playing...& yes, he most likely will sign a new contract.

you guys underestimate the value of Ale. We would probably still be in Serie B if it wasn't for him. Not just because of his goals but other players like Neddy & Gigi wouldn't have stayed if he had left. And so what if he's 32 goin on 33. He may have lost some of his pace but he's in good shape, he still has the magic and most importantly he gets his job done and that's the bottom line. And why should he take a pay cut? What has changed? He still delivers day in & day out and Juve make a hell of a lot of money on his image, name & merchandise (certainly way more than 5M a year). Del Piero deserves to get what he asks for because he earns it. Both on & off the pitch.

How funny would it be if you couldn't resign him so he got angry, so he then left to play for Roma or something. I think that would be hilarious.

Ale's plan is to have a contract untill 2010, go to the WC if possible, and then extend for one last year, a bit like Maldini and Costacurta.

After that, I'm sure he'd love to continue working for Juve, and God knows he'll be helpful. As a youth trainer, a PR representative, a lobbyist .... and maybe as a manager or President one day?
I'm not too worried about his contract, for now. Where the hell would he go??
