Paolo De Ceglie played a key role in this evening’s 5-0 demolition of Fiorentina, driving up and down the left flank to good effect and making a prominent contribution to the team’s defensive and attacking play.

Yet the 25-year-old was under the spotlight midway through the first-half after tangling with Cerci in an off the ball incident which led to the striker’s dismissal.

Speaking after the final whistle, De Ceglie said: “I was surprised because I didn’t understand the reason behind his action. I extended my arm, but I think it was a normal thing. It wasn’t painful, but it’s a gesture that needs to be punished.”

All attentions are now focused on the championship duel with Milan, with both teams to also go into battle on Tuesday night for a place in the Coppa Italia final.

“We need to recover as much energy as possible,” concluded Paolo. “We have important games ahead of us. Now we’re four points off Milan, but we’ll see how many at the end.”
