Baniyas closing in on David Trezeguet signing

ABU DHABI // David Trezeguet, the former France and Juventus striker, will became the latest big name to join the UAE domestic league when he signs a one-year contract with Baniyas which could be worth as much as €1.7 million (Dh9.1m).

Trezeguet, 33, is believed to have arrived in Abu Dhabi today from Nice, along with his agent, Antonio Caliendo, to conclude negotiations and have a medical, which would be the final hurdle to the Frenchman joining the rising side who finished runner-up in the 2010/11 UAE season.

He would be paired in the attack with Andre Senghor, the Senegalese who led the league in goals last season with 18.

Senghor had indicated a desire to join a European side, and the Norway club Aalesunds FK showed strong interest. Baniyas, however, was unwilling to part with Senghor.

Trezeguet arrives on a free transfer after parting ways with the Spain club Hercules, who were relegated from the top division. Before going to Spain, he spent 10 seasons with the Italian side Juventus, scoring 138 goals in 245 matches.

He also played with the 1998 France team who won the World Cup, and scored the decisive goal in the Euro 2000 final against Italy.

He's still quality, it's a pity no team worth note signed him. Fred, you better go watch the legend live.

I doubt he would come back to a club that treated him so poorly for the past 4 years of time there. Plus, I'd think he'd get better opportunities elsewhere at clubs with decent strikers. I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up working with Wenger 2-3 years from now.

Celtic have failed in an audacious bid for David Trezeguet, with the former France striker instead opting for a move to the United Arab Emirates.

The 33-year-old has agreed a contract with a reported annual salary of £1.4m after passing a medical in Abu Dhabi to join Baniyas.

Trezeguet's contract with Hercules, who were demoted to the second tier in Spain, had expired this summer.

Celtic had entered talks after being alerted to his availability last week.

The Scottish Premier League club have also cooled their interest in Maritimo striker Baba Diawara, with the Portuguese club reporting visa issues.

Celtic say they will not be following up their interest in the present transfer window and have since signed Sierra Leone striker Mohamed Bangura for an undisclosed fee from AIK Stockholm.

Trezeguet was in the French side that lifted the World Cup in 1998 but announced his retirement from international football 10 years later after accumulating 71 caps.

He began his career with Platense before spells with Monaco, Juventus and Hercules.

However, he has now joined the side who finished second in the UEA's professional league after deciding he did not wish to live in Scotland.
