they renewed him before Motta got hired.
Common Daniel, you and we all know that Giuntoli was talking to Motta since january and even so, lets asume that Giuntoli and Motta didnt talk before... Rugani was renew in May when Allegri was already fired so at least Giuntoli should have waited to know Motta's opinion on Rugani before renew him

Giuntoli is either confident of getting a replacement before end of the transfer window, or Motta has stated that he doesn't need another defender because of tactical view point.

rugani is an end of the bench guy, I doubt he was an urgent topic with Motta, and who knows maybe they wanted to extend so he’d be easier to sell. He also took a pay cut. I don’t think it’s worth talking about this much, he’s not prohibiting other moves.

I don’t care if he is a “end of the bench guy” he was going out of contract and we renew him without asking our next coach what his opinion was!

Listen… Im not a all knowing guy on how to manage a club but even I know that you don’t renew or buy players before having a meeting with your new coach and go for every player you have and ask the new coach what he thinks of the player, and that applys even more on players that are running out of contract.

If Giuntoli would have ask Motta what his opinion on Rugani was we wouldn’t have to renew him and Rugani would have leave, for free yes, but at least you don’t have to worry now on selling him, or next year.

Im not a Giuntoli hater, I will give my opinion on his moves at the end of mercato, but on this particular matter, we have to accept that Giuntoli didn’t not made the smartest move.

he was on an expiring contract, with a market value of ~zero

i don't think they extended to sell for a profit. they did it to save on last season's expenses by spreading the wages. and if ajax is covering the wages it's working at least for this season. then an other one to go, a problem to be solved next summer
