So, what was it at Empoli that made him look good?
potential.

generally speaking, we (we being football fans, not just juve fans) tend to forgive younger player for mistakes that we would never forgive older players.

take de ligt and bentancur for example. they are allowed to make mistake passes and penalties, because we see the potential in them to become better and better and learn.

but if these were players in mid to late twenties, then no excuse.

He always quite reliable as our backup CB since 2015/2016. And he played good when we played against Leverkusen and Lok. Moscow before pandemic.

But now he looks terrible and our defensive shape and pressing for all players also look worse. Like Roma's third goal, what on earth Berna did against Zaniolo.

Remember when we had the chance to sell him for 40mil :lol3:
We were super quick to plusvalenza guys like Kean, Spinazzola, Mandragora, Audero, but with him we stubbornly refused to year after year lol

He needs to start over, go to a small low table club where he will start each game and try to climb his way to maybe Roma level club by the time he's ~30. Problem is, those clubs don't have the money we would like for the sweet plusvalenza, so we'd probably sell to a bigger club where he will inevitably fail

What he needs is to move on and find a club where he is guaranteed a starting role. He has never been able to break into the defence and to be fair he has had stiff competition to do so. I never thought he would be the next great Italian defender but you can't sit on the bench for long periods of time then come in and find your feet from the get go.

Meh, none of these names impresses.
Can you think of an Italian player in last 10-14 years (who was not part of that WC 2006 generation) that was considered among top 5 in his position? The only Italians who made the UEFA team of the year since we came back from serie B were: Pirlo in 2012 (Juve player); Buffon in 2016 (Juve player); Bonucci in 2016 (Juve player); Chiellini in 2017 (Juve player).
It's the other Italian teams and the Italian youth schools who failed to produce super talents.
The only WC Italian player after that 2006 generation is Chiellini, and it's us who made him. Balotelli had the chance, but not the brains.
Year after year people jerk on Italian youngsters and year after year they disappoint.

You forgot Marchisio, better than Pogba, Vidal, Pirlo

why we didn't sell him 2-3years ago is above me.
More likely no real offerts for him so all rumors from shitty media

Verratti is a top 5 central midfielder in the world
yeah but sadly once players get into PSG/CITY or UNITED it's like a golden prison where they'll waste their career.
Pogba wasted 5 years at United all for money instead of going to Madrid winning trophies.

Man how I wish we could get both Verratti and Pogba it would solve all our midfield problems in a heartbeat
