i see your point and i agree with you. there was a foul on ricardo, maybe a disputeble call but there was a foul and end of story. also i agree that portugal played better. they were lucky enough to win the shoot out and they went further.
on the hand, had the goal counted, portuguese would be calling for meier's head just like english are now. would you say then that portugal still had time to come back into the game?? anyway, englast lost, portugal through, blah. may the best team win.
i dont hate portuguese because of this loss, nor do i blame meier (my location my give an opposite view but who cares). i just dont want them to win. i dont care who wins as long its not portugal.

No question, Vilhelmas -- you've got a clear head on your shoulder about it. So I can't knock you for your indulgences in the matter. (And I think we both would have liked to have seen Lithuania in the tournament, though they would have had their blocks knocked off. ).

I hate to be the one defending refs, but someone has to -- especially when I think they're making difficult calls and doing them properly under the situation. (That and it certainly wasn't Urs Meier's job to mark Rui Costa or to take that last PK against Ricardo.)

Portugal would have absolutely wanted to string up Urs if the call went the other way -- no question. But it looked like he made the right call in the interests of 1) (and most importantly) fairness to the incident and 2) fairness to the match. It's one thing to make a bad call that allows a goal in a foul situation. It's an even worse sin to have that decision additionally pretty much hand over the victory to one team. I don't think Portugal could have come back in the time left.

In all fairness, the Czech's are playing like the ones who deserve to win it all. But then we all get to pick our favorites. I'm just happy that I've been a fan of the Czechs throughout the qualifiers, etc. Even if they're not my top personal favorite to win it all, I'll still be quite happy if they do.

Even if you disagree with Meier's call (which I don't, and neither did any of the ITV or BBC announcers at my last check, for that matter), the call still kept the game in England's hands to win. Regardless, they failed to do that. But apparently there's no faulting England for failing to win the game in extra time here, as ridiculously shortsighted as that is.
Actually Gary Lineker, Alan Hansen and Ian Right all thought it was a goal.

And myself and most others here have faulted England and said the best team won.

Its getting annoying how many people are posting things that are not true.

Ian Right all thought it was a goal.
Hey, just because you twist the spelling of his name, doesn't mean he's correct :p

Plus, they're all English, of course they think it was a goal :D

Ive always fudged the spelling or Ian 'Right' :D

And my point wasnt if they were correct or not.

Just that swag had said they thought it wasnt a goal, which isnt true. Ive lost count of how many times ive read people post the opposite of what the people actually said. Good thing im here to correct eh? :D

I think thats a major factor of their success. Every player is very proud to play for the Czech, all the fans are 100% behind the team and every player respects each other.

Fairness to the match :howler: what a load of tripe how can that possibly factor in the decision making?

Yes, portugal dominated, yes it was in extra tim but the fact is he made a shocking decision that cost England a semi final place. how is that "fair to the match?"

to follow the czechs footsteps. i am assuming Azerbaijan was part of the warsaw pact
I see now. Azerbaijan has had a good start actually with a new NT coach. Won two games and tied one.

And yes, being Moscow's colony it was part of the Warsaw pact.
