It probably got to with them having the most fans of any football clubs, at least that's what they claim. To be the most supported football club in the world.

It depends what you measure. In terms of domestic titles are they the biggest, in terms of European Cups are Liverpool clearly ahead.

As the European Cup/Champions League is by far the most prestigious club trophy is it in favour of Liverpool in that sense, and United only got 1 league title more than Liverpool who will probably equal them in the coming years.

United got the treble, Liverpool none of that. Lets not forget that.
