Confirmation, Udinese game ultimately caused his departure:
"Did we receive any signals before the last week of mercato? We had clear signals before the Udinese game that he would stay. Was Mendes working since June to find him another club? True, but with different signals. Meaning, that nothing was becoming concrete." - Che Rubini

Hail to that "technical decision," thanks Tek, whatever gameplay that was in second half, and the subs.

On the other hand, it seems like they had Kean in their hand for some time - just notice how quickly the club wrapped him up and brought back here.
I'd assume the club would spend a bit more if Ronaldo left earlier. Perhaps we would have pushed out McKennie to land Tchouameni, whom apparently Allegri likes a lot. Maybe we'd have went for Vlahovic. Other than that, the plan from the very beginning was to let Ronaldo go and downsize the wage bill. It looks like Elkann wanted it and Allegri was 'at best' indifferent to CR7's stay. Maybe even Max wanted the sale, to start afresh with players he could control more and build around them. As Max himself pointed out today, Ronaldo would have left next year anyway, so building around him wouldn't make too much sense. At least from his point of view.
