Molinaro is believed to favour a move to Roma where he would hook up with former mentor Claudio Ranieri, who played him 68 times while at Juventus between 2007 and May this year.
According to Tutto Mercato Web, Atletico have moved first but Zenit have replied within the last few hours, launching a bid of their own.
Luciano Spalletti's presence in St. Petersburg could swing the deal, as could Alessandro Rosina's who moved there in the summer.
Juventus are believed to be holding out for an offer in the region of €4.5m.
Stuttgart are also rumoured to be thinking about making a bid in January.
