2002/2003: A Scudetto winning squad, and a CL finalist:

GK: Buffon, nothing changed in this department.

Defence:
Thuram or Andrade? Comparable I assume
36 year old Ferrara/Montero or Boum/Legro? The former I would say, but not by a far stretch.
Biri or Gryegera? I would say Grygera.
Zambro or Chiellini? Def Zambro.

Both defences are comparable.

Midfield:
Davids or Tiago/Marchisio? Davids. But still the current seem solid.
Camo or Camo? :p
Tacchi or Almiron. Don't know but comparable.
Nedved is still there but older.

I would say the Midfield of 03, is stronger.

Attack:

Trez is Trez, I don't think age would play much of a factor here.
Del Piero older
Di Vaio or Iaquinta? Iaquinta
Zala or Palladino? Def Palladino.

I would say our current is stronger.
You think this squad is better than our scudetto winning squad of 2002? A few corrections Thuram was right back not Birindeli and he is better than Grygera by a long way. Ferrara and Montero are infinitely better than a combo of Andrade and Boumsong

Davids is not to be compared to anything we have in our present midfield. How can you possibly compare the European footballer of the year Nedved to the 1 of now? Tacchinardi of that period was excellent and I have not seen much of Tiago and Almiron to make any comparism but I will say Maresca could not get into that team butshould be able to walk into this

In attack, that Dp is better than this 1 and there is no way that Trez can be getting better with age. Di Vaio is better than Iaquinta, why is that even in discussion? Zalayeta is still here so why are you comparing him to Palladino who might not be?
But just as important is that Lippi and Moggi were part of 2002 and neither is here now

well we did get some good players and some of our current players could make a good difference in the season and in those games where the ball wouldn't go in.

But to win the league is a big ask and we will need a huge amount of luck in regards to the players brought in making a huge impact and from the beginning. Thats a big ask and I wouldn't expect from all our acquisitions till now except for Andrade maybe. Also our key players keeping their form from last season like Alex, Neddy especially and the rest of the players.

Also the team will need to have a certain amount of cohesion that will just blow the small teams away and give the bigger teams with better quality a very hard time.

Then comes the coaches job both mentally and tactically. First he will need to instill that winning mentality through the veins of the players and teach them how to grind out those results from those tough games. Then he will need to find a system that would bring in the best team, and get the best out of them.

Finally when all that happens pray that we don't get an injury crisis.

Where did I say that this squad is better than that? I just collated the two teams with some comments. And I still think they are comparable, that squad wouldn't even get a mention in the top ten Juve squads of all times. Some points:

I didn't say Nedved of now is compared to the Nedved of then, on the contrary I said he is older, which means worse without saying. Same goes for DP.

True, Thuram was in the RB position. My bad.

Maresca would walk in now, but the Maresca of 02 won't

I rate Iaquinta more than Di Vaio

Trez isn't getting better with age, but not getting worse. He is turning 30 in Oct.

In any case, obviously both of us rate Almiron and Tiago differently. We obviously also will never see eye to eye on this. I believe that we could pull it off, but its not likely.

Been great debating with you. Dennis is it? :toast:

Yes, we definitely can. I'm not saying that it's probable or anything but we're capable of competing for and winning the Scudetto. Our squad may not be as strong as Inter's but I expect us to play with heart, determination and desire second to none. The new boys will be eager to prove their worth and the older ones will be there to lead the side. So yeah, Scudetto numero 28 is a possibility in my mind. Forza Juve!

Yes its Dennis. I dont know about never seeing eye to eye because I am not one to be rigid with my assessment on any1. I have made gross errors in the past by my judgement of players and I am not ashamed to admit that I never thought Luca Toni would be a great player when he was at Brescia. I am not sure at all about Almiron but for some reason you guys seems to have alot of faith in him. I remember Tiago at Chelsea and he was nothing special. he seemed better at Lyon but still nothing special either. Here's hoping he proves me wrong. But 1 thing you should realise is that now that they are part of our team, you are bound to scrutinise him more than you used to when they were at other clubs. I honestly did not realise how rigid and tactically awful Capello was, until he managed us. What is good enuff for Lyon and definitely Empoli may not be enuff for Juventus. I tell you what almost every season a signing excites me that makes me feel we could do it. This is a true story, I had the feeling we would the scudetto in 94 after years of heartbreak simply because of the signing of Ferrara. In 96 I was very excited when we got Zz and especially at that time Boksic. I was pleased at all when we sold boksic, Jugovic and Vieri to bring in Inzaghi and Fonseca but was happy when in january of that season we got Davids. Then after the brutality of Ancelotti era I was excited when Lippi returned and we got nedved, Buffon and Thuram but totally upset when we lost Inzaghi but more importantly Zz. I was happy when we got Zlatan, Emerson, Cannavaro and believe or not capello. So you can forgiveness if i feel Andrade is best signing we have done so far.

I think we are far, far away from the Scudetto. But I always expect less so I can be delighted if Juventus accomplishes more.....

IMO this season´s reality is to fight with Fiorentina and Lazio for the 4th place, which wouldn´t be bad at all. Juventus would then be playing Champions League qualifiers and that would mean a big chance to return to the winning ways asap.

The title of this thread is a joke. Of course not... we can't even beat Sunderland.

We will have a tough battle for 4th and that is the best I can hope for. Let's get Lippi back.

not really. friendlies' scores don't mean anything. they (managers) try new tactics and players to get ready for the new season. These friendlies results and performances doesn't concern me in any way for the new season..

So we just time them to be friendly! Who cares right. We should beat them with our eyes closed.
Yes it will be hard to win scudetto, but we have a chance. What we show in friendly matches is one thing and the most importent is how well will we do in the championship. I know that some teams are very good when they play friendlies, but then in real matches they can't bet anyone. So we will see our real value when the league will start. Most of players (Buffon, DP, Trez, Neddy, Camo..) will be highly motivated and this could be our advantage.
