:boh: Dunno. Which is why I'm asking. If anyone is going to compare two related metrics, they should try to make sure the cohorts match.

Many people hospitalized in the Omicron surge are there for other reasons and have only mild COVID-19

Some patients counted in COVID hospitalization stats are there for other reasons.

These "incidental" cases were found to be prominent in England and South Africa.

Experts including Dr. Anthony Fauci have also pointed to the phenomenon in the US.

Dude, the covid deaths are Covid deaths, not people dying from automobile accidents or gunshot wounds or unrelated illnesses who tested positive for Covid. This particular right-wing conspiracy theory was debunked long long ago.

Hospitalizations being higher by x% due to people in hospital for various things who test positive for Covid doesn’t mean they count random deaths as Covid deaths when it has zilch to do with it.

Deaths are still significantly lower than the ~3500/day peak in the US last winter. Around 2000/day right now.

Well, your original hypothesis question:

If ICU admissions are not going up, how are the people dying?
suggests that you're comparing ICU numbers with deaths and not seeing the correlation. If both metrics are not equivalently inclusive or exclusive of other co-morbidities and non-Covid-related issues, the comparison could be flawed.

For example, what if the ICU numbers included people who slipped on ice, suffered hypothermia or frost bite, or had heart trouble shoveling snow after a US seasonal snowstorm? But after a change to fairer weather, the ICU numbers might relatively drop without a correlated drop in Covid deaths.

The article doesn't explicitly state it, but it suggests that ICU numbers are entangled. The question remains how entangled are they relative to any entanglement for deaths.

You are politicizing it.

There is no perfect measurement for Covid severity, the only one that I find relatively reliable is ventilation. And those are not up in any country where Omicron is dominating.

What? I didn’t say anything about hospitalizations numbers not being high because of incidental. I agreed with that. I brought a study from BC literally a week ago that said 45% of hospitalizations are incidental here. None of what you just posted has anything to do with deaths. Or ICU admissions. It’s exclusively hospitalizations. In your initial post above you said “dying of Covid” and “dying with Covid” are different and brought up 8000 deaths. I countered that with the actual stats which are 2000 deaths/day which is only 60% of peak.

Those incidental hospitalizations have nothing to do with deaths. Covid deaths are Covid deaths. Having a comorbidity doesn’t mean it’s not a Covid death. They aren’t counting gunshot wounds and auto accidents as Covid deaths anywhere and that was debunked long ago. And yes, it absolutely was an alt right conspiracy theory. That’s not some lie. Nor is stating a fact politicizing it. If it was a “left wing conspiracy” I would have said that left wing conspiracy was debunked long ago. There is zero evidence that they are counting non-Covid deaths as Covid deaths in the first world.

:agree: Racism and misogyny, just like Trudeau said.
Your trolling is lame, dude. No one said anything about “orange man” here but you.

This is how England is measuring the Covid deaths

Number of people who died within 28 days of their first positive test for COVID-19. Data from England
https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/deaths

Can you imagine how many people will die with Covid if in a matter of month 30-50% of the population is infected with the virus? How can you debunk this?

What on earth does anything you just posted have to do with this discussion?

The non-Covid Covid deaths thing was a conspiracy theory, on the alt right, in Canada and the US, and was debunked long ago. Bunch of nonsensical social media posts claiming all these auto accidents/gunshots/etc etc were being called Covid deaths so hospitals could scam money and big pharma could pretend Covid was killing people. Just like the “vaccine is killing millions” is a right wing conspiracy.

Just like BLM and progressives with the retarded defund/abolish police have all sorts of idiotic left wing conspiracy theories about police departments. Just like idiots who believe that only racists and misogynists don’t support Trudeau lol.

But none of that has anything to do with The above discussion on Covid deaths and the Trump-Trudeau stuff is just trolling at this point.

If it offends your delicacy, I’ll just call them conspiracy theories. And leave out where they lie on the political spectrum lol

Lol c’mon. You legit think if someone dies in an auto accident 28 days later, it’s being called a Covid death. They still write out death reports that show cause of death. Lol. And to debunk this, if 30-50% of the population had Covid then 30-50% of all-cause mortality would be from Covid. There were 3.3 million deaths in the US in 2020. Almost 300,000/month. There have been about 50,000 deaths from Covid the past month. 16-17% of that. Not 30-50%

Never mind that in almost every first world country excess deaths > Covid deaths the past two years. Which at best for your argument suggests Covid death numbers aren’t being artificially inflated, at worst suggests they haven’t been fully counted.

I'm pretty sure with the infrastructure in place now in developed countries they are no longer classing someone who had Covid at time of death as dying from Covid, that was only in those early months during the start of the pandemic where ambiguous deaths were recorded that way.

Two weeks ago the average deaths in England were 8% below the 5 year average.
