As the cases in US are going crazy ICU admissions are going down

When you've got 30-40 percent of the population infected with a virus - out of those 30-40% many will die due to other causes. There is a big difference between dying from Covid and with Covid.
If ICU admissions are not going up, how are the people dying? It's clear by now that in most cases you have to be sick for 2-3 weeks, getting a viral pneumonia and needing oxygen in an ICU. How is Omicron skipping all those steps when most scientists are claiming that Omicron is milder?
As per 2019 it is estimated that 8000 people are dying daily in the US. This means that 8000 people are dying per day in USA because of oxygen breathing?
