Yep. People laughed when I said Di Maria was the most important player for their attack at WC 2014... but it's true. He stretches the defense, and makes space for Messi and the other attackers to do their thing. He's also the least predictable of their attackers.

Just shows again tonight how important he is for Argentina.
:agree: the guy was brilliant for Real in that CL run 2014 and continued his form throughout the WC. definitely wouldnt make it to the final without him

Messi is no Maradona and never will be. He'll never be as important to his nation as his counterpart was, even though today's Argentina national pool has a much better selection than the whole 80's decade. Get over it, He can't be compared to Maradona, period.

One is a kid raised into a team and a system that took the world by surprise and dominated for several years (Tiki Taka) but will never amount to anything outside of his comfort zone, the other was a God at every team he played in.

One played in a violent era of reckless defending and a tougher game making it a dare for a striker to take on defenders, they needed balls. The other players in a era of everything is a red card, and referees are guardian angels, especially in his case.

Breaking record after record and score a million goals in the weakest era of Football in it's history is still a big achievement but we're left with a sour taste in our mouths. Could he do it back then? Probably not.

Doesn't change the fact he's one of the best there was but sorry, Messi is NO MARADONA.

Oh, I thought the same in the 2014 WC.

Omg. Are they going to let that douchebag Pitbull near the pitch?

@Post Ironic Say what you want about Brazil being pathetic nowadays and it's true but Argentina hasn't won shit in 23 years

Brazil won 2 World Cups and 4 Copa Americas during that time. 7-1 doesn't sound so bad now.

Once again Argentina goes out on penalties in the final. Before the final they looked like a team with a midfield that can build-up play and create proper chances. Today they reverted to worldcup mode where the plan is to hoof the ball forward and hope for an individual moment of magic from Messi. Watching them is like watching the current Azzuri, only they do have the midfield and attackers to build up play unlike Italy.

Why did they change their style? They were doing very well in the competition so far playing proper football. They were creating proper chances until today. Higuain, Lamela, Messi, heck even Lavezzi was scoring goals in the old system. If they have an actual game plan that involves passing and creating they should brush Chile's squad (who are substantially weaker on paper) aside. Higuain's chance was a gift from medel. Aguero's chance involved some build up. The rest were set pieces. That was all they managed to create for 120 minutes despite having a star studded squad. They need a proper coach who would set a proper game plan throughout the competition. Tata should be sacked. Chile plays this way because they dont have a good squad but Argentina has no excuse.
