Ballack on way to Blues - Agent
By Adam Marshall - Created on 2 Mar 2006

Michael Ballack looks to be on his way to Chelsea on a lucrative Bosman free transfer, according to his agent Michael Becker.

After reports claiming the Bayern Munich captain has decided to head for Stamford Bridge were initially played down by the midfielder, Becker suggests his client will join the Premiership champions if Real Madrid do not resurrect their interest in his services.

Manchester United and Internazionale made Ballack one of their priorities this summer but Becker has made it clear that the Germany international wants to join one of the favourites for next season's UEFA Champions League.

"Nothing has been signed but there will be ongoing contact with Chelsea," Becker told BBC Sport. "There is strong interest from both sides.

"The trend is in this direction [to move to Chelsea].

"Michael had initially been very keen on Real Madrid, but the leadership changes there in the last few months mean we don't know what's happening.

"Michael will continue his career with a side that will win the Champions League.

"He definitely will not go to Inter. He would only move to a club where he has a better chance of winning the Champions League than at Bayern."

Quite where Ballack will fit in to Jose Mourinho's side is another matter as his natural role is currently occupied by England international Frank Lampard.

Yet big-spending Chelsea have proved they are willing to assemble a multi-talented squad with plenty of cover in all areas.

hahha, chelsea has so many midfielders already....
Really? They've been playing Gudjohnson there a lot this year. They have Lampard, Essien and Makelele of that calibre, and Makelele is no spring chicken.

yes they play gudjohnson, but players like duff and robben are also more midfielders, dont forget Cole. For me drogba nad crespo are their only strikers.

Duff, Robben, Cole and Wright-Phillips are winders. Duff might track back more than the other three, but none of them plays in the middle. (Cole has in the past for West Ham, but isn't good enough to play there for Chelsea).

Chelsea typically play five in the middle - two wingers, a holding mid, Lampard and another centre mid.

If Makelele is to be sold, or just replaced, who plays the holding role? Essien? Then who else plays in the centre with Lampard? Ballack would be a good signing for them.

A central midfield of Essien, Makelele, Lampard, Ballack and Gudjohnsen with Geremi as cover is a frightful thought indeed.

Hes nearing thirty and wants a major championship under his belt. With Ballack Chelsea could move Essien into the holding spot behing Ballack and Lampard. This will not only make me hate Chelsea more but also give them more depth as Makelele is no longer an everyday player.
