With this I don't want to imply anything. Or maybe I do.

CALCIO, COLLINA: ORA POSSO DIRLO, TIFO LAZIO

------------------------------------------

Collina: Now I can say it, I'm a lazio supporter
Now that he has had to leave the refereeing, Pierluigi Collina has confessed his faith. Blah blah blah..."....But even though (I'm a laziale) Lazio has never won in the first 10 matches refereed by me".

Perugia - Juventus 1-0, 99/00 season, last match...Remember?
:(

Collina incredibly ruled that the match should go on despite flooding rain...The damn ball couldn't even bounce!

Well, Lazio won the scudetto and guess what? Collina has always been a LAZIO FAN, as revealed by Lotito (SS lazio's president):

Lotito: "Non mi ero mai accorto che Collina fosse laziale"
25 11 2005

In ogni modo mi fa molto piacere".

No, I just think it's funny, singular if you want, that the ref of the Perugia-Juve game (14.5.2000) was... Collina.

Perhaps it did contribute to his final decision of letting Perugia-Juventus go through, but any referee will cheer for a team.

I dunno, the team should've still of beaten Perugia, or at least a draw, it's not like they (Perugia) were water-logged pitch experts or something. And let's not forget the dismal display at Vicenza a few weeks before.

Lazio fan or not, overrated he was.
Intriguing. This forum is rife with people who can barely get out of their chairs and yet take pot shots at great talents, saying, "Overrated."

However, this is one case where I am not entirely sure the degree of adolation he's received is fully warranted. There almost seems to be a mechanism at work where enough of Italy needed to believe in a ref who was beyond reproach and the taint of mistake and corruption, and Collina fit the bill nicely.

Certainly a great ref who did much to elevate the integrity of the sport. I just don't know if the degree of idol worship he ultimately received was actually appropriate.
