I don't know about that.
Oh yes, he was. A good ref no doubt, but special looks and fame aren't two qualities needed to be the best ref in the world. And as swag mentioned, he wound up with a special image in Italy for other reasons, that also served him very well.

Indeed and Collina is objective enough to be almost biased AGAINST his favourite team,
but that cant explain the mistakes he did,(red cards and penalties do have agreat affect in a match and he was keen to abuse them,he determinated the result in many matches insteed of letting the players, like other good, bad not bald refs, do)
his obsession to eliminate Davids in every single chance he got
and his tittle FIFA's man of special missions he got after "reffering" some international team's games for FIFA...

Intriguing. This forum is rife with people who can barely get out of their chairs and yet take pot shots at great talents, saying, "Overrated."

However, this is one case where I am not entirely sure the degree of adolation he's received is fully warranted. There almost seems to be a mechanism at work where enough of Italy needed to believe in a ref who was beyond reproach and the taint of mistake and corruption, and Collina fit the bill nicely.

Certainly a great ref who did much to elevate the integrity of the sport. I just don't know if the degree of idol worship he ultimately received was actually appropriate.
There never has been, and never will be, a referee who doesn't make errors. There will always be a difficulty in balancing tight control of the match with letting play flow more freely.

Collina was certainly among the top referees in the world. His reading of the game often surprised me.

Did he get too much praise? Yes. On the other hand, his fellow referees get too little, almost to a man.

Yes, I think even the clouds were Laziale on that day ;)
Juve should have won the scudetto before Perugia and probably Collina wasn't influenced in his decisions by his being Laziale, but... ever since I read it, everytime I think back at that afternoon, the thought comes to my mind with a laziale scarf, you know?
Not knowing was less frustrating :sigh:

    Perugia - Juventus 1-0, 99/00 season, last match...Remember?
    :(

Collina incredibly ruled that the match should go on despite flooding rain...The damn ball couldn't even bounce!

Well, Lazio won the scudetto and guess what? Collina has always been a LAZIO FAN, as revealed by Lotito (SS lazio's president):

Lotito: "Non mi ero mai accorto che Collina fosse laziale"
    25 11 2005

"Non mi ero mai accorto che tifasse per la Lazio, vuol dire che questa squadra incarna uno spirito di trasparenza e rispetto dei valori autentici del mondo dello sport. In ogni modo mi fa molto piacere".

Il presidente della Lazio, Claudio Lotito, commenta con favore la dichiarazione dell'ex arbitro Pierluigi Collina che, in un'intervista, ieri aveva svelato la sua passione per i colori biancocelesti.

    :ferocious :wth:
I remember exactly, This match should never have been played in such conditions. But the fact that collina is a laziale explains that.

collina was the best ref out there, that match should not have been played...but his mistake was not influenced by his lazio affair. since when do we blame the refs?
