I would put marrone in front of defense for many reasons . First the player in a recent interview said it was his prefered position and for a good reason i would say . He isn't as dynamic as needed to be a box to box midfielder in my opinion and althrough pogba can play there considering that he is much more adept at playing further up the field i would always set marrone as an anchor/playmaker between the two of them . Placing pogba there would also limit his attacking capabilities too i think , playing higher will make it easier for him to be closer to goal without having to worry to much about defending considering that marrone would be watching his back .

Attack is tricky . I don't think that an attacking trident can be done with the three of them , especially with zaza at lwf , as he is the most pure goalscoarer from the three of them and he has to play closer to goal . Considering that berardi has played sometimes as a trequartista i would put him there and both of gabbia and zaza as strikers

Defense is the same , at mid you have two players who both have good physical capabilities to be able to give the defense support needed and they also have the technical attributes to play the ball and dictate tempo without giving any point of reference of who is the playmaker . As for the attack you have berardi gabbiadini and zaza at their natural position . The only thing it lacks is a lwf

Gouano???? he has been a terrible failure. Boakye and Beltrame and perhaps even Marzouk chould be considered, as should others in the primavera such as Sakor and why not Buoy? Still have hopes of Padovan coming good; he has the physique, pace and finishing skills.

As for your words on Masi...twice you mentioned you had heard criticism of his defensive abilities.His defensive talents are exactly why ternana took him on loan. Once he got into their starting XI, they went on a run of conceding just the one goal in the following 7-8 games...They know he is going to be valuable which is why they spent a couple of million on him, which was hugely their largest transfer over the summer. he was excellent for ternana last season and far from awful for Pro Vercelli.

To cover each and every movement in and out of our youth sector – the loans, co-owns, sales, contract terminations and purchases – in any great detail would take longer than this Sunday afternoon affords me. And so rather than try to fit a mountain into a mole-hill I will focus on the main players of interest both those with our primavera and those plying their trade away from the club yet still owned by Juventus.

Let us begin with the progress report on ace goalkeeper, Nicola Leali. After a Summer spent fending off suitors, some from the top flight, the young shot stopper – who excelled hugely at Lanciano last term – signed with solid serie B outfit Spezia. The Aquilotti (Little eagles) of Liguria have a chequered history, having declared bankruptcy in 2008 after a lengthy partnership with Inter which saw them act as a feeder/ reserve club of sorts to the rightfully maligned by all juventini Milanese powerhouse. Returning to professional football the same year as A.S.D. Spezia Calcio 2008, the Ligurians were admitted to Serie D, from where they have quickly clawed their way back to the second tier, winning promotion to Serie B in the 11/12 season leading to a respectable finish of 13th in the table.
Joining Nicola from the Juve stable of hot prospects are Hordur Magnusson (free kick specialist, solid CB of our primavera) and more recently, brazilian regista Gabriel Appelt, who spent last season doing a fine job at the unfortunately relegated Pro Vercelli. Suffering from injury at key points in the season, Appelt clearly impressed enough to invite interest from Spezia. Too good to go down with that sinking ship.

Leali endeared himself to the fans with a match winning performance in the coppa italia against Genoa (5-4 on pens) with Magnusson also making his official debut, arriving as a second half substitute and scoring in the shoot-out. The keeper appears to have won the trust of Luigi Cagni and has remained between the sticks for Spezia’s first two matches in the league – An average 0-0 home draw with Cittadella followed up with a promising 1-2 away scalping of Juve Stabia. Icelandic U21 star Hordur has not yet debuted in the league but his time will surely come. The same can be said of Gabriel, who made the bench yesterday but couldn’t reach the field.

After wowing spectators with his goal and all round performance in the Villar Perosa match, Swiss striker Zoran Josipovic moved on loan to Novara. Only recently turning 18 years of age, the forward has already made his debut for his promotion seeking new side, appearing as a substitute in their opening day shock 2-1 away loss to Avellino. A largely unknown quantity given his lack of games since joining Juventus, but the early signs of his loan move are certainly positive.

Over at Pescara, midfielder Elvis Kabashi and star prima punta of last year’s primavera Stefano Padovan are yet to make their competetive debuts. Both players only managing thus far a place on the bench for the 1-2 away coppa victory over Torino. After netting a phenomenal 16 goals in 16 matches last season, Stefano will be hoping to prove he can repeat such feats at this higher level. Elvis also featured regularly in Baroni’s talented midfield. High hopes for the duo.

Alberto Masi’s brilliant efforts in the Ternana back line after moving there on loan last January prompted the Umbrians to send 2m euros to Turin in exchange for a 50% stake in the promising defender. Having broken into the Azzurrini set-up, Masi has begun the season as he ended the last, putting in two admirable shifts in his sides opening league games. After finishing 9th last season Ternana will be aiming for promotion which can only benefit Masi’s development.

Daniele Rugani returned to Empoli after his sterling showing for our primavera in our last campaign, but with 50% of his registration now in our pockets we must keep an eye on the towering centre halve whose career at both international and domestic level is on a steady upwards trajectory. Its no surprise to see Daniele involved in all four games played by his club this season and with his recent call-up to the italian U21 side to boot, its fair to say that he is taking the step up from primavera level in his hefty stride.

The same cannot (yet!)be said of former primavera ace portiere, the romanian giant Branescu, who made his debut for new loan club Juve Stabia in a depressing 3-0 defeat to Pescara. Blameless for all three which passed him, let us hope that his confidence and chances haven’t been too badly dashed against the rocks.

After a merry go round which saw two handfuls of clubs at home and abroad vying for his signature, Richmond Boakye finally left the club a week ago. Swapping Italy for Spain, the up and coming ghanaian international joined primera liga newcomers Elche FC on a year loan deal. Much talked about over the summer as a possible inclusion in our senior squad after his second quality season in Serie B on the trot, the explosive front man announced his arrival in Spain by scoring a very late equalizer in his club’s hard fought 2-2 away draw with Almeria. Elche crunched the second tier last year, waltzing over the finish line an impressive 5 points clear of their nearest rivals. Its an interesting choice of club, given the interest from Serie A, but what has likely secured what must be seen as a coup of sorts, was probably the lack of a set price to purchase Richmond at the end of his loan. They need his goals and he needs playing time at a stronger level than Serie B. Long may his early success continue…

Sticking with Spain, Italy U21 regular Fausto Rossi has moved to Valladolid on loan. As the player himself noted, it is the best opportunity of his career and whilst I don’t expect to see him in a Juve shirt in the future, I hope he finds the strength of character to finally do justice to the talent he possesses. No doubt with the weaker defences in Spain his free flowing game will mature.
20 year old former primavera captain Andrea Schiavone moved to Siena on loan during the close season and has already made his debut for his new side in their two coppa italia triumphs. Yet to make his debut in the league, Andrea is another player who has left the youth ranks with high hopes for the future.
Other brief mentions go to…Christian Pasquato. Dropped down a league after his misadventures with Bologna, entered into a co-ownership agreement with Udinese and was promptly loaned out to Padova where he has been playing regularly and already notched up his first goal.
Fillipo Boniperti is flying high on the wing for Crotone, already establishing himself as part of their first team.
I could list more, but this article is in danger of becoming a novella. So i will quit whilst ahead and update soon-ish....

Uefa Youth League kicks off today…Copenhagen v Juventus

Can Sakor emulate his hero????

Whilst Vidal and Tevez launch themselves into battle against the Danish champions, their younger counterparts at Juve are set to do the same with the commencement of the Uefa Youth League ready to kick off today. The tournament, which replaces to some degree, the now defunct NextGen series, will run concurrently alongside the seniors champions league routine, that is, of course, until the end of the group stage when anything is possible.

So today at 3pm CET, Andrea Zanchetta and Fabio Grosso will send their young charges to the field in Copenhagen and hope for a promising start to the inaugural competition.

The squad is as follows-

Defenders- Bertinetti, Tavanti, Curti, Penna, Varga

Midfielders- Mattiello, Sakor, Gerbaudo, Cevallos, Di Benedetto, Roussos, Hromada

The notable absences of Barlocco, Marin and Beunacasa could well be explained by late arrivals at the club and also a decision of Zanchetta to avoid placing all of his eggs in one basket. It could also be more likely a case of having little time to judge his players and choosing the best of what he has seen since joining the club over the Summer. The regulations of selection demand that only players born after 1995 can take part and also, that 10 of the players per squad must have been with their club for at least 2 years.

Last weekend, we played our third game of the primavera league, beating a stubborn Empoli team 2-1, which leaves us third in the table after 3 games having won two, lost one. Donis was the star of the show scoring a wonderful solo goal as well as winning a penalty, which he missed, and causing the opponents constant trauma. Gerbaudo grabbed the other goal from the rebound and also hit the post late on.

The midfield dynamo Vajebah Sakor will lead the side from the centre of the park alongside the highly thought of Ecuadorian winger Cevallos and italians Gerbaudo and Mattiello. In attack, Marzouk has already opened his account and with rising Greek star Donis in fine form, the omens look generous…

Serie A players

From our Serie A players, Immobile is the one that deserves a mention. Torino managed to draw 2-2 with Milan and our youth product had an assist and was one of the best players of that game. Gabbiadini got a NT call up, however didn't managde to get any minutes. His Sampdoria played Genoa in Serie A, Manolo took 6 shots but Perin handled them. Samp lost 0:3. Another loss for Sassuolo, Zaza and Ziegler played whole game. First one got better notes, he really tried to make some troubles to Hellas defenders. Berardi is still suspended, he will be back on matchday nr 5. Sorensen's rehabilitation is taking longer than we thought (Gazzetta suggesting he'll be ready for 6th matchday) and Marrone missed the game because of the injury (no info about how serious it is).

League game he watched from the stands. Diagne and Gouano are waiting for the debut. Prince Desir Gouano was loaned to RKC Waalwijk after Atalanta co-owned him.

Bravo to Beltrame, kid managed to play in 4 games in 8 days! He showed up not only in club but also international level. In his debut in Bari he got an assist and in the u20 Italy-Poland game he scored a brace. Liviero, Leali, Magnusson, Masi, Padovan, Rugani and Schiavone were called up to NTs as well. Leali, Masi and Rugani have safe places in the starting 11s of their clubs so if they missed any league game it was because of the NT call up.

Gabriel got his debut for Spezia, played whole game vs Crotone and got brilliant reviews. First game in Virtus for Buchel, next minutes in Siena for Spinazzola. Branescu and Pasquato don't have to worry about starting spot. Boniperti, Castiglia, Josipović, Kabashi, Martinez, Nocchi and Pinsoglio didn't manage to get any minutes.

Serie A players


Gabbiadini played two full games, however Sampdoria earned only 1p. It's not fault of the 21yo player, because LGdS choose him twice as the best Sampdoria player on the pitch. Against Roma he managed to shoot 6 times and against Cagliari he got his goal. Zaza scored a very important goal for Sassuolo against Napoli, earning first point of the season for his team. Zaza scored all Sassuolo's goals this season in Serie A (2). Berardi finally got his debut in Serie A and got good reviews. Couple of days before Sass got demolished by Inter - Zaza was subbed in in 1st half and Ziegler played full 90min. Reto watched the game vs Naples from the bench.

Good news for all Sorensen fans, he played some minutes vs Milan, first time after his long injury. This wasn't a good cameo, he came in when the result was 3-1 for his team and final result was 3-3, italian press writes he could do a lot betterwith last goal. Immobile missed Bologna game because of the injury and against Hellas played only some last minutes. He should be ready for derby on sunday. Marrone should be available from the next matchday.

Gabriel, Leali and Magnusson still doing great. They played two full games and Spezia won with Palermo and Ternana. Hordur debuted in Serie B and won his starting spot as a LB. Brazilian boy has a safe spot after his good appearances and Leali was one of the heroes of the game vs Palermo. First goal of the season for Pasquato, who's a regular for Padova. 180minutes for two defenders - Masi & Rugani , the latter's Empoli still top of the table. Schiavone got many minutes, but didn't provide anything spectacular.

Beltrame and Buchel managed to get another minutes, Liviero however rides the bench after his og vs Cesena. Branescu joines the club of joinless goalkeepers (Nocchi, Pinsoglio), he was replaced by 37yo Calderoni. Not even single minute for Boniperti, Castiglia, Josipović, Kabashi, Padovan, Spinazzola and our ex-star player El Malaka Martinez.

In the last two matchdays Berardi is the player that deserved at most to be mentioned. His comeback to the Sassuolos first 11 completely changed this team. LGdS choose him as the best Sass player against Lazio and Parma. 19yo won and scored a penalty vs Parma - it was his first goal in Serie A. Ziegler and Zaza also played - swiss player plays as a lwb since Sassuolo changed formation to 3-5-2 but still fails to impress.

Immobile scored against Sampdoria, his previous game against Juve was very weak and striker was criticized after his foul on Tevez. Gabbiadini wants to forget his last two games, vs Milan and Torino. He was amongs the worst players on the pitch. Sorensen missed game against Roma due to the flu. Against Hellas he played in first 11 and his team lost and conceded 4 goals. Marrone is still injured and LGdS predicts he'll back at the end of this month.

Serie A players

From all Bianconeri playing in other clubs Berardi is doing the best job recently. After his suspension finished 19yo regularly shows his talent - in 7 league games (6 in first squad) he scored 5 goals and had 2 assists. Last weekend he was a MoTM due to his hattrick against Sampdoria. Finally some regular playing time for Marrone - after injury he played 3 out of 4 games fos Sassuolo having over 80% of pass completion rate, an assist and good reviews. The other two of our Neroverdi players have less luck recently - Ziegler often starts on the bench, losing his place to Longhi and Zaza after scoring goal vs Udine received red card and was suspended in last matchday.

After good start of the season Gabbiadini seems to be underperforming. He was subbed out twice before the 60' and wasn't even called up for the game vs Sassuolo. Good reviews for Immobile, who scored 2 goals in 3 games. 23yo unfortunately gets as many yellow cards as he has scored goals - he was suspended because of this in the game vs Napoli. After health problems Sorensen returned to the good form and first squad of Bologna. Defender receives good reviews and his team defence started playing like they are supposed to, having 3 clean sheets in last 3 games.

In the game vs Spezia he got one past Leali. Safe place in starting 11 of their teams for Rugani and Pinsoglio. Table leader from Lanciano uses Buchel occasionally. Juventus Youth and Primavera UPDATE November 8th, 2013

Since returning from injury, Luca Marrone has played well in the 2-1 home win over Bologna, creating a goal in the process, playing the Pirlo role in a familiar 3-5-2 formation. Fought well enough, did little wrong, but nothing wonderful in his side’s 1-2 loss to Udinese, again as part of a midfield trio flanked by wingbacks. His latest outing was solid and industrious with the ball, managing a superb 93% accuracy with his 41 passes over the 90 minutes.

Many believe, myself included, that Marrone possesses some real class. Now that he is fit, and gaining match sharpness, acclimatizing to his new surroundings, and has an in form Berardi in front of him, and the chance to play regularly in his favoured midfield berth…its time he proved himself, and I think he will. Maybe we won’t need to look too far in terms of a Pirlo apprentice, or even challenger…

There has been a change in fortunes for Sassuolo since Berardi returned from suspension and Marrone from the treatment room. Without the striker, of whom we own 50% registration rights, they played four games, lost them all, with a goal difference of -12. With Domenico back in the side, they have won a couple of games, and only lost twice in seven, producing a goal difference of -1. Two assists and five goals in those seven games represents a major attacking threat. At 19 years old, making his debut in the top flight, we are potentially looking at a real gem here…Especially when we compare his stats (a goal every 94 minutes) and form seen with the eyes with our other players established/establishing themselves in Serie A…


Gabbiadini- 2 Goals in 10 serie a starts. One goal per 400 minutes.

Zaza- 3 goals in 10 serie a matches (7 starts). One goal per 234 minutes.

Immobile- 3 goals, 2 assists, 9 serie a matches (6 starts). One goal per 210 minutes.

Manolo is the one who is lacking, and yet arguably playing in the most settled and well seasoned side of the four youngsters in question.


Further afield…

Our surprise signing from Bra, Mbaye Diagne, has yet to make his debit for Ravanelli’s struggling Ajaccio of France, who remain as they have been since the opening few fixtures, perilously loitering near the trap-door.

Moving across the border, bypassing those gritty basque tribes and finding ourselves in the sunny South-east, so close to the sea we can feel it in our lungs when we take our first full breath of fresh morning air…but no, we are not here to swim, to relax in the soothing gaze of the sun goddess. We are here to check on the progress of Richmond Boakye. Who has been in solid form for the struggling newcomers to la Primera. The explosive young striker has scored just the two goals from eight matches, but 6 of those performances have come off the bench and he remains the club’s second top scorer. Too hard to gauge much, but no reason to worry. Yet, his promise remains secure.

With the primavera still to cover, the wind howling not quite as loudly as my hellhound desperate for attention and my desperation to be outside, strident and demanding, after spending too much time today stuck in the anemic atmosphere of my office, I will focus on not only my three favoured loanees cutting their teeth in the second tier, but also perhaps the presently most promising. Thankfully, for the purpose of brevity of research, they are all at Spezia. Who are enjoying a promising start to the season, presently sitting 9th, just outside the play-off zone, on 17 points after 12 games.

Leali (GK)-
Surely destined for Serie A sooner rather than later Nicola Leali has been in fine form. Fast establishing himself as the number one choice between the sticks and continuing where he left off last term when he won an award for best goalkeeper in Serie B. Played 9 in the league, 2 in the coppa.

Magnusson (CB)-
Already a regular in the Icelandic U21 set-up, Hordur the Iceman Magnusson has worked his way into the starting line-up. No mean feat for his debut bow in professional football. With more competition for his place, his 9 appearances so far represents wonderful progress for the stopper with great free kick skills confirmed by his 3 assists for his country over the last 3 months.

Appelt (DM)
After impressing in the ill-fated Pro Vercelli campaign of last season, Gabriel has already managed 9 full games for his club. With only 2 losses in those 9 games it seems his value to Spezia is growing steadily, and in turn his value to us. His position, as a deep lying regista with sound defensive zeal, is surely of interest to us, for we have only Marrone in the Pirlo role with any chance of staking a claim for a chance in our senior squad in the near future.

Briefly, I will mention our two Stefanos, who worked so well together in Baroni’s primavera before the Summer, when both moved on to mix it with the men…

Beltrame-
The race for the cultured second striker’s signature was hot over in the close season, with his final destination ending up in Bari whose wretched form finds them languishing in 20th position. 3 starts and 5 appearances from the bench isn’t terrible, but with just the one assist to show for his efforts, its no surprise that he is struggling for a spot in the first XI. With such high promise shown in the recent past, Beppe and Paratici will need to seriously consider finding him a stronger club if Bari continue to falter. On a more positive note, Beltrame continues to play a regular role for the Italian U20s notching up 2 goals in his last two showings.

Padovan-
Our primavera top scorer decided to head to Pescara. And what a shame that Zeman isn’t still at the helm…The Turin born prima punta has been given just the four substitute appearances, setting up a goal in the process, but clearly hungry for more. As with Beltrame, he continues to prove useful for the Italian U20s, scoring once in his last 2 games at international level.

Room for improvement for them both. Yet the season remains young, and their situations can be reconsidered during the Winter mercato if an upturn in form and fortunes fails to appear.

PRIMAVERA

Led by Zanchetta and Grosso, our youngsters have been toiling away on two fronts. Firstly domestically, slowly finding their rhythm after a topsy-turvy start, which was to be expected with so many changes to the squad. At this stage of the campaign, we are third in the table after 6 games. Our latest fixture in the league was a hard fought 2-3 away victory against Parma. Otin, Penna and Tavanti grabbing the goals.

In Europe, Zanchetta has had to negotiate our efforts in the inaugural UEFA Youth League, which marries itself for the group stage to the senior Champions League competition. Our fortunes there have been mixed to say the least.

We began by mirroring our senior side with a 2-2 away draw to Copenhagen. Dynamo midfielder Vajebah Sakor and towering centre back Pol Garcia scored the goals. Following this, we smashed the turks, Galatasaray, 3-1 at home, thanks to strikes from Marzouk, Gerbaudo and Soumah.

Unfortunately that is where the good news ends, for our last two matches in the Youth league have seen us face off against Real Madrid, and lose horribly in the first game 6-2 (Buenacasa, Soumah), then lose yet again at home in the follow-up, somewhat more respectably, 0-2.

With a home tie against the Danes still to come, and an tasty adventure in Turkey, our future progress in the competition remains in our own hands. We sit third presently, with 4 points from 4 games.

In terms of a favoured first XI…very tricky to discern, but the following seems as strong as anything else
