No actually, we have to see this team being consistently good against the lesser teams. Because we could take on and beat the bigger teams with a squad that had lesser quality (and depth) then this one. The improvement this new squad needs to have is the ability and consistency to grind out results against the lesser teams. Thats the diffence between champions and 3rd place with no hope for the title.

Mad props to the Tinkerman for having the balls to buy Poulsen instead of let's say Xabi.

Sissoko-Poulsen is one hell of a pairing and will do wonders especially in CL.
This partnership reminds me of Davids-Tacchinardi pairing and apparently not only me, while I was reading comments on juvepoland.com forums. Sissoko has noticeably improved his technical skills and Poulsen doesn't need 20 chances to prove his worth, he's in a great form.

Agree 100%. But i think that Poulsen is better than Tachinardi...

It was just time wasting subs.

If he was actually making the change for any tactical purpose he would have make the subs 10 minutes earlier.

yeah ..but...we scored in the 67th minute...he could make the subs early..anywho...these are ranieri's kind of subs...
We played well and the goal was in the air. We all felt it that they can't hold on for 90 minutes and we're certainly going to score sooner or later.
And really, before the goal there was no need to make any subs and change anything in the great football we played. We were dominant like we weren't for a long time.
In Ranieri's case i'd have done the same and only if it was 0:0 until 75th minute i'd have changed something in our attack.
I don't see a reason to criticize Ranieri for not making any subs before the goal.

I disagree, before the goal the FWs were looking pretty flat, and in the end, Amauri was at the right place at the right time...the goal wasn't "created" per se...

Actually Ahmed, we did control game completely. Yes we did have 2-3 moments, one with "penalty" another with Melberg wrong header, but apart from this we were in control 100%.
Yeah, our goal was not "created" but it was still hanging in the air all the time.
CR done well, even Vinman said so :)

the only thing I did not like is that he he should have subbed Camo off early in the 2nd half. Camo looked tired a lot towards the end of the match. Considering he will also start vs Zenit I don't understand why he played the whole match. Everyone knows we are a better team with a fit Camo on, so it makes no sense to subject him to unnecessary fatigue problems so early in the season.

Oh sure, there was no chance that Udinese were gonna score, but we didn't look the most brilliant going forward either...Neddy and Camo really had to work their asses off to make those goalscoring opportunities...then again Udinese isn't exactly dog shit either

sorry ...i didn't said it well....i wanted to say that the subs could be done earlier than the 85th minute and after the goal...at least 10 minutes for dp and trez to play....but juve red said it well...it wasnt a tactical decision..

Ranieri stands by old boys Channel 4

Tuesday 16 September, 2008

Claudio Ranieri explains why he's sticking with the Juventus old guard in the Champions League clash with Zenit.

The Bianconeri dive back into the Champions League on Wednesday evening against the reigning UEFA Cup and European Super Cup holders.

David Trezeguet is expected to partner Alessandro Del Piero upfront, although Amauri is an option after his fine form against Udinese.

“I evaluated many things,” explained the Coach. “Above all who is in the best shape, but international experience also counts.

“What mattered the most, though, was the fact in these two years the players have suffered so much and fought hard, making enormous sacrifices to get back into Serie A and Europe.

“Now I want to give them the chance in this competition that they deserve, that they earned. This is my way of showing all the respect I have for them.”

The likes of Trezeguet, Del Piero, Gigi Buffon, Mauro Camoranesi and Pavel Nedved stuck with Juventus even after the Calciopoli scandal and their demotion to Serie B.

Ranieri fielded only one summer signing in the first leg of the Champions League preliminary round with Artmedia and again seems set to stick with the old guard.

Jonathan Zebina and Cristiano Zanetti are the only remaining injury worries for Ranieri, so Nicola Legrottaglie and Giorgio Chiellini start in central defence.

Juventus squad: 1 Buffon, 3 Chiellini, 4 Mellberg, 7 Salihamidzic, 8 Amauri, 9 Iaquinta, 10 Del Piero, 11 Nedved, 13 Manninger, 15 Knezevic, 16 Camoranesi, 17 Trezeguet, 18 Poulsen, 19 Marchisio, 20 Giovinco, 21 Grygera, 22 Sissoko, 28 Molinaro, 29 De Ceglie, 30 Tiago, 32 Marchionni.

Claudio analyses Zenit threat Channel 4

Wednesday 17 September, 2008

Juventus boss Claudio Ranieri has discussed team selection and stressed his respect for tonight's opponents Zenit St Petersburg.

The Bianconeri are ready for their emotional return to club football's biggest competition after a period of exile.

Ranieri's men kick off their campaign by hosting Russian outfit Zenit, who could provide a tough challenge.

Our main weapons are experience and self-belief but Zenit aren't to be underestimated,” Ranieri stressed.

They have made great investment and arrive here having won the UEFA Cup and the European Super Cup, so they are tough opponents.

“However, there's no fear. We are very highly motivated and we know how good our players are.

“Where would I place Juve in the European pecking order? We are amongst the second seeds. I am very interested to see how we do on Europe's biggest stage.”

Ranieri is expected to turn to Alessandro Del Piero and David Trezeguet up front and gave some hints on team selection.

Everyone is available except for Jonathan Zebina and Cristiano Zanetti,” he explained.

Who will I chose in attack? All four strikers are physically doing well.

“I will choose players with international experience, but to be honest there is another decision to be made.

“The players who made such enormous sacrifices deserve to be rewarded for their sweat by playing in this competition.”
