he played there twice under Conte (or 3x, dont really remember) around February, and Conte quickly abandoned that idea. in Maxs 1st season, he mostly played RCM (where he played his best football for us) in a 4 man midfield and DM when Pirlo wasnt there. it was only in 2015/16 that he became a full time DM in a 3 man midfield, before his injury
Im pretty sure in the second half of the season whenever Pirlo did not play he was the regista. The first time being when he was subbed on vs Cagliari and caused the tide to turn (Llorente double). Conte never abandoned the idea just he had Pirlo there already and was set with Pirlo, Pogba, and Vidal as starters regardless of how well Marchisio was at regista.

Under Allegri he was elite wherever. Top 3 in the world Allegri's first season and only behind Pirlo+Tevez when ranking the best players of the post calciopoli era (tied with Vidal)

Allegri was the one who figured out Marchisio's best position. Marchisio played his best under Allegri. The truth is Marchisio is probably finished. There is nothing outside of maybe 45 minutes of football this year to suggest otherwise. There's no way Allegri would bench a prime Marchisio. This is just an irrational thought.

I am more comfortable with Bentancur in a 2 man midfield at the end of the match than Marchisio.
I agree. As good as Marchisio was at his best, it's been months since he showed anything close to that form.

He actually looked pretty good whenever he set foot on the pitch. Probably better than our other mids.

But if he's still not fit enough by now to play regularly, then what's the point?

He played a majority of his minutes this season vs Cagliari, Benevento and Crotone. All home matches. (whoscored.com)
And even those performances were "ordinary" (trying hard not to say "average").
