If you check the pre-Celtic match press, the Brits didn't really think much of Marchisio and it seemed they expected Pogba. Maybe Celtic didn't do their homework on him either, because while Vidal was subdued and got attention, Marchisio found plenty of space imo. So I am thinking, maybe his below best performance leading up to the game is just part of the big game plans

I thought a bit of it was also due to that Forrest lad playing high up on the left for Celtic in an oddly shaped formation where there was no RW.
Also Marchisio's ghosting runs in behind the defence were going to be more effective than Vidal pushing forward due to Celtic's high pressing game requiring a high defensive line IMO.
