Last non-Italian to captain the club in a game was Trezeguet. Nedved would have been before him.

Edit: You get it, it's fucking rare for a "set captain" not to be Italian at this club.

Yeah, I meant non-Italian official first captain. Guess we've never had one.

Wasn't Didier capt for a while?

Leadership is something that comes with age and seniority, as well as assumed responsibility. Del Piero didn't start off as a leader, Chiellini wasn't always a leader in the team. It happens when the older ones move on and the player becomes one of the more senior players and assumes more responsibility.

Definitely captain-material, and I don't remember if he ever was vice-captain, but no. He was not captain. Vialli and Conte all the way during Deschamps' Juve-stint.

This while he was captaining his country to the World Cup. And he captained Marseille to the Champions League at 24 years old (which Wiki says is the youngest ever captain to do that in the CL).

Marchisio will probably get it if he stays long enough. Buffon is probably best for now.

Chiellini always had that 'extra' in him, which gives him leadership IMO. But it's his qualities that shouldn't classify him as a captain I think.

Marchisio never says a single word on the pitch, I think captain should motivate the team.

And I don't think it comes with age, some players have it inside them and some don't, simple as that. Some are captains even at 20s because it suits them.

I don't remember Chiellini being like that when we had Zambrotta, Thuram and Cannavaro in the team. Or even in Serie B. The season after maybe, but he was a little bit of a hot head then too. He's changed a lot since then.

Look at Totti. It took a long time for him to actually behave like a captain despite getting it from pretty young. Gerrard on the other hand was a natural-born leader.

Anyway, not saying Marchisio will become one, but he could. He still has Buffon and Chiellini before him.
