A National Model

When he was a promising young Italian player, Claudio Marchisio used to wear jeans and a t-shirt. Now that he is an Azzurri, over the t-shirt he wears a grey suit. “There is always a thought in the back of my mind about what I’m wearing.”

Young, cute, and very busy. With Juventus, his wife Roberta, and his son Davide. One distraction shoes. He has almost 100 pairs. “Some of them I’ve never even worn,” he says with a smile, somewhere between pleased and guilty, Claudio Marchisio.

I met him 5 years ago. He was a young and promising talent of the Juventus Primavera squad: low rise pants, a t-shirt and his iPod in his ears. Then the first team, Champions League, the national team, the World Cup and his marriage (at only 22 years old) with Roberta. It is with her that he is comes to this ex-workshop in Milano transformed into a photography set. The t-shirt is still there, hidden, however, under a grey suit jacket rather sought.

Personality even all dressed up. Claudio is completely at ease. He makes himself comfortable without shyness in what was at one time the office of a mechanic, now houses the wardrobe and make-up room. Between a light haircut and a brush of foundation, we begin to talk.

Talent in discussion

Claudio Marchisio was born in Chieri (Torino) into a family absolutely bianconero, on the 19th of January 1986. He is considered a strong point of Juventus as well as the National team.

A model, who would’ve ever though that in 2006?

“At 18 years old, you don’t think about that. It is one of the consequences of being a footballer. You have everyone’s eyes on you, but they are welcomed cautions.”

What do they say in the case of your new career?

(He looks at his wife and she laughs) “Let’s just say that in the family I have a few problems. They make fun of me for how long it takes me to get ready, for the hours I spend in the bath, for the creams and products I use. Roberta tells me that I’m vain, but really when one takes care of themselves this much its because they see flaws in themselves.” (Now it is his wife smiling, not very convinced by his justification “freshly baked”).

I imagine, then, that the choice of the suits that you wear are not dictated by the case.

“Never. There is always a thought in the back of my mind about which one to wear, whatever the time of day or night. There are morning that I come into the Juventus dressing room all dressed up. My teammates ask me where I find the desire and the energy at 8 in the morning. But for me it is something natural.”

It is here that Roberta interrupts: “Imagine he goes shopping in suit and tie. Vincenzo (Iaquinta) always jokes around with him about it.” He smiles: “Its true, but, ironically I care more about myself in the morning than in the evening, because I am usually out all day. I don’t go out ever without at least a change in bag. Morning on the pitch, then lunch at an event, afternoon at an inauguration and the evening at dinner…you can rarely go anywhere dressed the same!”

You don’t actually change your clothes four times a day?

“Four, no. But a couple at least, yes. I like to pass from the elegant suit to low rise pants. Someone said to me that I spend more time in the armoire than with her.” (Last look at his wife, and then she says goodbye with a kiss).

You don’t find it a bit feminine?

“I don’t find it to be so. Until I was 10 years old, to think of a man who waxes or uses anti-wrinkle cream was a joke. But now the masculine world and the feminine have become closer. Taking care of one’s self and of your style isn’t just a thing for women anymore.”

From the Viareggio Tournament to the Italian National Team

Claudio Marchisio was born in Chieri, in the suburbs of Torino, on 19 of January 1986. At 7 years old he began to play with the Juventus giovanili squads: he will win the Viareggio Tournament and the Primavera Championship. As a midfielder, he debuted in the first team against Frosinone, in October 2006; after one year on loan at Empoli, he became one of the columns of the Juentus midfield (124 appearances and 10 goals) and of the National team (9 appearances). He married in 2008 with Roberta, Claudio became a father to Davide on the 31st of August 2009.

Is it only Iaquinta that makes fun of you?

“Come on! We joke with Alessandro (Del Piero) too… Really he teases, that he is very attentive to details. Nothing about the captain is ever casual.”

What is style for you?

“Style is something absolutely subjective. I take inspiration from others or from what I see around, but then I personalize everything to create something that represents me and that makes me feel better about myself.”

What is your favourite accessory?

“Shoes. Without a doubt. They are my passion. If I pass in front of a shop window and I see a model that inspires me, it takes a lot not to go inside. I got to almost 100, some of which I only wore once…”

In the dressing room

The passion for style has made Marchisio the victim of the sarcasms of his teammates: especially Alex Del Piero and Vincenzo Iaquinta.

Between the footballers that you’ve met, who paid more attention to their style than you do?

“Definitely Jean Alain Boumsong (at Juve from 2006-2008, not at Panathinaikos) he was a real gentleman, e then Lilian Thuram (at Juve from 2001-2006, World Cup winner in 1998): elegant and prescind.”

Let’s play a game. Name me a squad in… jeans and t-shirt.

“Napoli.”

Suit and gym shoes.

“Inter.”

Jacket and shirt.

“Milan.”

Fashionable style.

“Fiorentina.”

Sweatshirt and long pants.

“Udinese.”

Elegant dress.

“Juventus, naturally.”

Even the Juventus of recent times?

“Yes, of course. Perhaps with the last button of the shirt open. At today’s Juve only a few small details are missing in order to return to being the usual ‘Old Lady’.”

What are these details?

“This is a unique season, in which the club has worked a lot in the reconstruction phase to be able to return, within the next season, to being competitive. We are really sorry about our elimination from the Europa League and Coppa Italia, it comes not by chance during a period in which the most absences happened. In the championship we are playing for a spot in the Champions League, our seasonal objective. We have to remain concentrated: the satisfaction will come.”

There is not the risk that this season will be a repeat of last season?

No, of this I am certain. Del Neri is working a lot on group concept. The dressing room is united. Common goals.

Contract renewal. If I told you: “Juventus for life”, would you sign right away?

“Why not, this is a club to which I owe so much, almost everything.”

The make-up artist interrupts us: “I’m finished.” Marchisio gets up and asks what he must wear for the shoot. He starts to change and, saw what he said, not surprised by his complete lack of embarrassment to play model for a day. While he is choosing his shoes he looks at me: “Your not finished, right?”

Eclectic midfielder

Born, from the footballing point of view, in the Juventus nursery, Marchisio also played one season at Empoli.

Almost. We’ll close with the Unity of Italy, which we are celebrating 150 years of. What do you think of our multiethnic country?

“I am proud to be Italian. It is a land that conserves its foods, traditions, dialects that renders it unique. But the world changes and we are called to open our borders. It is moving towards, or maybe we are already there, a multicultural society, even if the attachment to traditions remains.

Their little one or the new Tardelli?

In 2009, according to The Times of London, he was among the top 10 most promising players in the world. But Stefano Borgonovo’s statement intrigued Claudio Marchisio: “He has personality, I remember the great Marco Tardelli… Marco had less technical ability, but scored more often. “ A flattering comparison, but challenging, that Marchisio took seriously: “I went on the internet to see a couple of his picture: maybe, in the course and in some movements, I resemble him a little.”

Do you have anything against the “oriundi”?

“Of course not. We are the last country to adapt ourselves to this change. Look at Holland, Germany, France: for years they have integrated players that were born abroad. We are adapting ourselves now.”

A lot of your teammates don’t think like you, maybe they are afraid of losing their spot on the team?

“I wouldn’t know. I can only say that we all have relatives abroad and that the most important thing is to put as much effort in as possible when wearing the Azzurri jersey.”

He closes the concept right while he put on a pair of brown moccasins: “I really like these.” Even those?

His first Juve Goal

Few of those who cares? Everyone cares. Look at their faces after the games. It's not about caring, and he is not covering for Grosso and Motta. FFS guy can't even cover his own man.
