Decent player. But will not win you scudetto's. Not in the same league as a Cambiasso or Gattuso/Pirlo at thier peak. This may be due to his age or him simply not being up to it. The club should show some ambition in the transfer market, by signing one of Diego/Modric and aquilani, to be taken serious league & champions league contenders.

What were Gattuso, Pirlo and Cambiasso doing when they were 22?

I bet none of them were much better than Marchisio is now.

And Marchisio is our 4th or 5th choice CM. The other players you mention are key players for their teams.

De Rossi at the age of 21 and Gattuso at the age of 22 were already part of the Italy national team. Pirlo's case was different. At that moment, he was still considered as the heir of Roberto Baggio, playing as a mezzapunta/trequartista and was on loan from Inter in teams like Reggina and etc. But the fact he played for Inter of that moment is an important factor why he couldn't exploit.

Anyhow, all the three won the champion of the U-21 Euro (Pirlo and Gattuso won the 2000 U-21 Euro and De Rossi won the 2004 one), which at least showed that they were one of the best youngsters of their generation. Let's see how will the likes of Marchisio, De Ceglie and Giovinco do in the next year's U-21 Euro. I don't really think they can compare with the Italian generation of 74-79, who are simply too good.

As to the likes of Aquilani and Montolivo, I never see them as world-class. They are not and would never be, IMHO. I think the 86-87 generation of Marchisio, Cigarini and etc have the potential to become better, but not as good as Pirlo, Gattuso, De Rossi and etc.

Nice post, Juventine.

I wasn't suggesting that Marchisio will necessarily get to the level of some of the players mentioned: merely that 22 is too young to make a definite comparison between players.

I said it before and I maintain what I say, I believe that Marchisio has what it takes to be a champion and I have more faith in him becoming a great than even Giovinco.

I belive he has the potential to be a great DM. I did not see the last few games of juve. according to the comments of RAI he had a great game against Milan..

Acquilani did not prove anything yet.. Well De Rossi might be better currently..

Chiellini wasn't regarded as a player with so much potential to be one of the world's best defenders 3 years ago but his sudden meteroric rise to the top proved otherwise. Why wouldn't Marchisio follow his footsteps??

Don't mistake me saying that I think he will be greater than Giovinco, I think there is a better chance of him becoming a great. I like his style and he looks like a psychologically steely player, obviously his talent is nowhere near Giovinco's.

So, if his talent isnt nowhere nears Giovinco's, how is it he has a better chance of becoming a great player?

And yeah, liked Marchisio since the Serie B days, and every Azzurrini game for the last 2 years, but just saying I know what kind of quality he become, and he is a nice overall midfield talent. But just dont overhype him, atleast not this soon.
