Never mind Pirlo. But shouldn't a starting midfielder have scored at least one goal and had more than one assist in 30 games? Khedira has scored 4 and provided 3 assists in 2 games. Even Lemina has scored two goals in 5 games.

Neither Khedira nor Lemina are attacking midfielders. Is Marchisio having a bad season or is he purely being played as a defensive midfielder where his only job is to tackle and intercept?
You are correct in pointing out that it is strange that he has not registered any goals or assists. But I think you are incorrect in taking that as a measure of his form this year.

His job does not include goal scoring or assisting though it would ofcourse be nice if he scores or assists. With the ball, his job is to distribute the ball to the more offensive players. He can switch play from the right side to the left side. He can pass the ball back to defense for bonnuci to try a pass. He can take the ball from the defense and give it to a player in a more dangerous position.

Without the ball, his job is to make himself available for any player under pressure be it a defender or an attacker. He can also intercept passes and tackle and switch to a counter attack. Many players can do what he does with the ball (distribute) but most lack the necessary off the ball movement to be good registas. You end up with a static player that can pass and when another player is pressured he is not available to relieve the pressure and keep possession.

He does all this very consistently so he is a very good regista/DM. 1 or 2 extra assists or goals don't change the fact that he is doing his tactical role almost perfectly. I'd normally expect him to get the occasional assist but that would be an added bonus. What matters is that he can do his role consistently at a high level. That is better than being inconsistent but more involved in our goal scoring because if he has a day off, our possession game stops functioning the way we saw early in the season.

Pirlo was Pirlo so he could take on offensive duties as well. He was also protected by Vidal who is on a different level than Khedira. But even for Pirlo, a good game is when our midfield is an oiled machine because of his presence regardless of whether he registered an assist or not. Pirlo could have bad games despite scoring or assisting.

We needed Pirlo's offensive skills because our attack sucked but now we have a good attack and can do damage going forward without Pirloesque passes.

Both of Lemina goals were only two times he played RCM box to box, same role Khedira has. Other times Lemina played DM and never threatened because he never joined attacks. Same thing with Marchisio, it's that simple, he sits in front of defence. Khedira basically an AM with his movement forward.

That said, Marchisios long distance shooting is God awful. Wtf is he doing in training.
Now this is actually a worthwhile post.

Yeah, agreed. And yeah, dafuq went wrong with his shots

It's funny how some people question his contribution because he doesn't score or assist. Sergio Busquets is the player widely regarded as the best player in his position and he almost never scores (no goals this season and only 6 goals in his whole career in 239 games).

Could people already understand that not all payers need to score or assist to be brilliant football players. Football is a team sport and Marchisio's job is to make us play better (which he does) and help us win games (which again he does). DM is probably the most undervalued position in football throughout history just looking what Real did with Makelele makes you understand this.

Odd they're not pursuing Khedira instead, he's close to Marchisio and cheaper. Bargain.
He has injury problems and marchisio is better. Marchisio can play regista at a top level, something Bayern have a lacking in at the moment and he can play as B2B. Khedira can only do the latter and is injured most of the time.

18-4-0 with Sami on the field :touched:

Would have been 19-3-0 if he didn't get subbed out against Bayern. Wonderful player and true leader on the pitch. Wouldnt trade for 3 Kantes
