Also notice that it was precisly after his substitution that we completely fell apart. The counter attacks that resulted in the 3rd and 4th goal are exactly the things he is responsible for normally not happening.

Our falling apart started somewhere around the time when Joaquin was introduced. With or without Marchisio similar thing would have happened. Fiorentina started to play their game, something they neglected in the 1st half for whatever reason. I would say extremely cautious approach on their part.
As a b2b midfielder solid defensive contribution is expected from Marchisio. But he needs to offer something in the final 3rd as well. He had 16 passes completed and glorious opportunity, which could have killed the game, missed.
Whether or not a similar thing would have happened with Marchisio on the pitch, we'll never know. It's quite likely. Even if he is more reliable in closing down the opposition than Pogba tends to be & Vidal turned out to be in this particular game.
What I don't understand however, is why he was the one to be subbed out. Perhaps he's still struggling to complete 90 min., otherwise it made no sense at all. Never even mind that the player coming on was supposed to be "punished".
He was injured for 80% of the games and has looked pretty good the games he played. Not spectacular or decisive, but he did havea few nice plays, like winning the ball back to set up Giovincos goal against Milan. Also against Fiorentina I thought he did well and almost scored the 3:0, when, at least in my view, he wasn't really responsible for not finishing the chance.
