"That wasn’t just because of their players but also as they were constantly favoured by referees. It was impossible to win at a club like Inter."

Ronaldo twice ‘lost’ the Scudetto to Juventus during his Nerazzurri career, one possibly as a result of a controversial loss at the Delle Alpi in the 1997-98 season - when he had a good penalty appeal rejected.

U may cry when u play better than the opponent in a match and the ref give them a penalty and loose unfair the game,
u may cry if u are winning-controlling the game and toldo comes in the net with the ball and ur keaper.
But CANT be a striker and ask the ball to be put 11steps away from the net, that means u r not a value is 0,
cause thats the only way u can score in juve's defence with the "not so perfect players",
so u sould better sh*t up and play football,
if dont go back to brazil for vacations and let the others play
Well I guess, Ronaldo was in the wrong team... we can not do anything with the refs, the just love juve, as we do..;)

Luxemburgo does his homework
Monday, 21 February 2005
By Andy Hall in Madrid

The mouthwatering meeting Real Madrid CF and Juventus FC not only promises a new instalment in the story of two of the aristocrats of European football but will also be a tactical confrontation between the two coaches: Vanderlei Luxemburgo and Fabio Capello.

Video surveillance
This first knockout round encounter is Luxemburgo's first UEFA Champions League game, having taken over at Madrid from Mariano García Remón during the winter break. He was reluctant to give too much away about his plans on the eve of the match but did reveal that he has been keeping close tabs on Juve for some time.

Video analysis
"I have lots of videos of them and have been to see them in Turin," said Luxemburgo, whose own team suffered a 2-0 home defeat by Athletic Club Bilbao on Saturday . "We know that they are a great side, [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic in particular is one of their star players. We know that it will be a game like no other."

Guessing game
Nor would the Brazilian coach give any hints as to who would take to the field, although with Ronaldo set to overcome an injured toe and Míchel Salgado cleared from a knock, it would seem that he will field his first-choice side with Michael Owen on the bench. "You will find out about the lineup [on Tuesday], but if Ronaldo can play then he will," he revealed. "He is one of the best players in the world but still, he is part of a team and how we fare will not depend on him alone."

Training switch
It is clear that for Madrid, the most important game of their season is looming. Breaking away from routine, Luxemburgo switched Monday's training session from the Ciudad de Fútbol to the Santiago Bernabéu itself, reasoning: "Here we can sort out our tactics - behind closed doors."

Toe trouble
For his part, Ronaldo admitted: "My toe still hurts but I am hoping the twinges will have subsided. This is a make-or-break match against a team that has come here to win but we should not be worried about Juve, we must focus on our own game and winning the match."

Nedved doubt
Capello, who coached Madrid in 1996/97, appeared in positive mood, but regarding Pavel Nedved, who is nursing a knee injury, he remained non-committal. "Pavel will train as normal and we will assess his situation after that," Capello said. French striker David Trezeguet is not so fortunate, having stayed at home with flu.

League form
"Madrid lost on Saturday because four of their star players were absent; tomorrow they will be playing so that result will have no bearing on this game," continued Capello, who watched Juve held 0-0 at FC Messina Peloro at the weekend. "The same applies for us and however our recent form in the league has been, this is the Champions League, a different competition and one that is very important to us. We must forget about our domestic form and think only of Tuesday's game."

Previous encounter
Striker Alessandro Del Piero, who scored in Juventus' 3-1 second-leg win when these teams met in the 2002/03 semi-finals, said: "It is an honour for me to be involved in a game like this, I am sure that the protagonists this time will be different from the last time we met. A lot has changed since then, it is a different match. I would like to think that maybe I can repeat my performance from 2003, but we will have to wait and see what happens on the night."

I can see that the trick in the game is to get the ball behind Gravesen...the defence is pure shite....Let us hope this works and the forwards are lucky.

CL Preview: Real Madrid-Juventus
2/21/2005 11:48:00 PM
Games do not come much bigger than this. Two giants of the European game come head to head this week in what looks like being an epic encounter. As soon as the draw for the second round of the Champions League was made, fans and pundits around Europe were licking their lips at the prospect of Real Madrid vs. Juventus. The first leg takes place this week at the Bernabeu.

BACKGROUND

These two giants have met a number of times in the last decade, most notably in the 1998 Champions League final where Real came out on top 1-0 thanks to a Mijatovic goal. Five years later Juve got their revenge - this time in the Champions League semi-final. After losing the first leg 2-1 in Spain, Juve had the night of their lives in the second leg in Turin. Goals from Trezeguet, Del Piero and a stunner from Nedved meant Juve won the match 3-1 and reached the Final 4-3 on aggregate.

CURRENT FORM

No doubts on this score: Real Madrid are the form side going in to this game. Since the arrival of new coach Vanderlie Luxemburgo Real have lost just one of their last eight games (closing the gap on Barcelona at the summit of La Liga to seven points) and have looked much more hungry for success. Juve on the other hand have struggled since the turn of the year (Juve have picked up only four points from their last four games) allowing Milan back in to the race for lo scudetto.

TEAM NEWS

Real Madrid are sweating on the fitness of star forward Ronaldo who hurt his foot dancing at his engagement party. Michel Owen will replace the Brazilian if he is ruled out.

Juve’s main worry is the fitness of Czech ace Pavel Nedved (knee) who is rated only 50/50 to take part in this game. David Trezeguet, who missed the weekend trip to Messina with flu, is again out. Kapo and Montero also miss out.

Real Madrid could play a 4-4-2 or a 4-2-4, with David Beckham and Thomas Gravesen the two holders allowing the front four of Zidane, Figo, Raul, Ronaldo/Owen the freedom to attack

Juve’s line up and formation would seem to depend on Pavel Nedved; if he plays Juve are likely to go with a 4-4-2 while if he is ruled out it could be a 4-3-3 or even a 3-5-2 for the Old Lady. Another big decision has been taken away from Fabio Capello: with Trezeguet out he will go with Del Piero and Ibrahimovic at the Bernabeu.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

There will be a number of key battles in this much-anticipated game. Many believe that Buffon and Casillas are the two best goal keepers in Europe and they will be key in this tie. Will Buffon be able to keep out Madrid s galacticos? And will Casillas be a match for Del Piero, Nedved and Ibra? The answers could well decide the tie.

The battle for midfield will be Beckham vs. Emerson, the England captain against his Brazilian counterpart. Both are strong and have a lot of energy but who will be able to get the upper hand going forward - Beckham with his range of passing and free kicks or Emerson with his powerful forward runs and long range shooting?

Zebina vs. Roberto Carlos will also be a key battle. Both are good going forward but not so good when having to defend; should be fascinating.

PROBABLE STARTING XIs

Real Madrid (probable): Casillas, Salgado, Helguera, Samuel, Roberto Carlos, Beckham, Gravesen, Figo, Zidane, Raul, Ronaldo.

Juventus (probable): Buffon, Zebina, Cannavaro, Thuram, Zambrotta, Camoranesi, Emerson, Blasi, Nedved, Del Piero, Ibrahimovic.

PREDICTION

The tie is too tight to call and it may well come down to which side can perform best on their travels. An away goal will be vital for Juve while Real Madrid will be looking for a lead to take to Turin. It may also take one of the stars on show to do something a little special. Zidane will be looking to impress against his form club, while Del Piero wants to silence his many critics. Should be a great game Enjoy!

Juventus boss Fabio Capello believes that Champions’ League opponents Real Madrid fear his side.

The two teams meet in Spain on Tuesday, just days after a weakened Real lost 2-0 at home to Athletic Bilbao.

"The fact that they left three first team players out (Zinedine Zidane, Raul and Ronaldo) on Saturday shows that they are worried," said the tactician.

However, the former Real tactician admits that the two-legged tie is a well-balanced one given the strength of both sides.

"Real have champions who can create a winning move at any time," he continued. "I would say we both have a 50-50 chance of qualifying for the last eight.

"They have changed the way they play recently following the arrivals of (Coach) Wanderley Luxemburgo and (technical director) Arrigo Sacchi.

"They are now more disciplined in defence which makes them much more dangerous than before.

"We are in good shape though and fully focused on this match. We have the ability to put in a great performance."

Juventus will return to a 4-4-2 system after Pavel Nedved recovered from injury. Alex Del Piero will partner Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the absence of the flu hit David Trezeguet.

Meanwhile, Del Piero was asked to comment on Ronaldo’s claim that Juve are ‘aided’ by referees in Italy.

"His comments haven’t caused any problems within our camp," stated the captain. "Now is not the time to talk about the past.

"We have a game tomorrow and we are just as motivated as we were two years ago when we beat them in the semi-finals.

"I just hope that at the end of these ties, I will have been a protagonist."

Juventus coach Fabio Capello believes Real Madrid's defeat by Athletic Bilbao will make them determined to win Tuesday's Champions League clash. "They were missing four important first-choice players on Saturday, so for me that game wasn't a true reflection of the strength of Real Madrid," he said.

"Tomorrow's game will be completely different and Real will be a different team," Capello commented at the Bernabeu on Monday.

The 2-0 loss to Bilbao was the first blemish on Real's league record since coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo took charge at the end of last year, but Capello thinks the Brazilian will ensure the Spaniards are tougher opponents than when the draw was made.

"Real have taken a big step forward since Luxemburgo has taken charge," said the Italian, who led Real to the Spanish title in 1997. "The team now play a different style in terms of tactics and defence."

Capello said the fact that Real had rested Ronaldo, Raul and Zinedine Zidane for the Bilbao game showed how seriously the Spaniards were taking the first knockout round first-leg tie.

Juventus knocked Real out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage two seasons ago, losing 2-1 at the Bernabeu and winning 3-1 at the Delle Alpi.

"I think Luxemburgo left them out because they've got a lot of respect for us," he said. "But I've seen the video of the game and when they came on the pitch in the second half Real were a completely different side and looked far more dangerous.

"Madrid have some great players who are capable of winning a game at any time, but we have plans that we hope will stop them, but of course I'm not going to talk about that now."

Capello refused to be drawn on whether former European Footballer of the Year Pavel Nedved would play after a month out with a knee injury.

Juve travelled to Spain without leading striker David Trezeguet, who pulled out because of a bout of flu, and defender Paolo Montero, who is nursing a thigh injury.

Trezeguet's absence gives Alessandro Del Piero a chance to try and repeat his goal-scoring performance the last time the two sides met in European competition.

The Italian striker said, however, that past performances would provide no guide as to what will happen.

"I'm really proud to be able to play in tomorrow's game, but my main concern is to perform well on the pitch. Many things have changed from two years ago - this is a different game with different players."
