Capello expects 'exemplary' Juve
Monday 4 April, 2005
Juventus boss Fabio Capello insists his side will "act in an exemplary manner" as they face Liverpool for the first time since the Heysel disaster.

The tactician made the statement as the two sides prepare to meet at Anfield on Tuesday, in the first leg of their Champions’ League quarter-final.

"We will need to act in an exemplary manner," said the Coach after 39 fans lost their lives before the 1985 European Cup Final.

"That was a terrible tragedy but we need to be good enough to try to just concentrate on the game, leaving thoughts of Heysel and the Pope’s death to one side.

"We are professionals and we must do our work in the best way possible."

Juventus go into the game as favourites to qualify but the Italian isn’t taking anything for granted.

"They’ll probably play with only one striker but I don’t feel that will be an advantage for us," he added.

"How is David Trezeguet? The fact that he has been included in the squad means that he is available to play."

The Frenchman is likely to start on the bench though because of an ankle problem, meaning that Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be partnered by Alessandro Del Piero in attack.

"It is an important game in which winning is all that counts," stated Del Piero on Monday evening.

"We are looking to score and take home a victory. Liverpool are a strong side, especially at home, but we are prepared to win."

The captain also commented on the Heysel disaster. "I was watching the game with some friends," he recalled.

"When it became clear what was happening, my father sent me outside to play football in the courtyard. Only when I grew up did I understand what happened that night in Brussels."

Meanwhile, UEFA have confirmed that all games this week will be preceded by a minute’s silence in memory of Pope John Paul II.

Juventus (probable): Buffon; Zebina, Cannavaro, Thuram, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Blasi, Nedved; Del Piero, Ibrahimovic

It is sure that not all LFC supporters are like that, but it was the first time that I saw the picture. I was shocked!

Of course, you must've been, anyone would be sick at that sight.

Do you know of the Hillsbrough disaster of 89 where 96 fans died? I also saw pictures of those and they made me sick. We have gone thru tough times as well and i just hope the two groups can enjoy a chance to meet up and make friends.

After the Heysel disaster, the club was punished and we did suffer as a consequence, but of course nothing like that of the Juve fans at Heysel.

Before the draw I didn't want Chelsea and Lyon. We have played Chelsea three times this season and Lyon are very strong and a good team. I have never played against an Italian team before and my good friend Pavel Nedved plays for Juventus. I have spoken to him about this game and it is always good to play against your friends.

Nedved is a great player and a great person as well. He will be a danger for us but Juventus have a lot of great players like Ibrahimovic, Del Piero and Thuram.

Despite Juventus having an array of world stars in their team Baros believes Liverpool can win the match and reach the semi-final.

We have played quite well in the Champions League so far and we are confident. It will be a tough game and hopefully we will be happy in the end.

Hope that the hatred of fans from both sides would be reduced to a minimum. And I wish that a peaceful + entertaining game would be brought by the both sides. May the best team win.

Draw serves up poignant reminder <------ The Background story
Tuesday, 29 March 2005
European football will remember its darkest day when the protagonists of the 1984/85 European Champion Clubs' Cup final, Liverpool FC and Juventus FC, meet for the first time in UEFA club competition since the Heysel tragedy of 20 years ago.

On Wednesday 29 May 1985, 39 people lost their lives after a concrete wall fell inside the stadium trapping Juventus supporters underneath. Some fans had been fighting inside one area of the ground, but those attempting to avoid the violence found their escape blocked by a concrete wall which surrounded the enclosure in which they were situated. The strain caused by spectators attempting to scale the wall, together with the crush caused by those trying to flee, resulted in the wall collapsing, trapping those beneath.

The match was intended to be the last at an arena built in the 1920s, and so it proved as Heysel was demolished and rebuilt as an all-seater venue, with the only reminder of the tragedy being a gateway near the main entrance; the sole element of the original stadium still existing. As a result of the violence, English teams were banned from European club competition for five seasons, the ban extended by a further year for Liverpool. Michel Platini scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

Following their suspension, Liverpool have faced Italian opposition three times. They lost 4-1 on aggregate to Genoa 1893 in the quarter-finals of the 1991/92 UEFA Cup, Ian Rush scoring the Reds' goal. Since then, Liverpool have played AS Roma twice - and prevailed on both occasions. In the fourth round of the 2000/01 UEFA Cup, two Michael Owen goals earned a 2-0 victory in Rome. Though Roma won 1-0 at Anfield, Liverpool went through and eventually defeated Deportivo Alavés in the final.

The sides met again in the UEFA Champions League second group stage the following season, with a scoreless draw in Rome prefacing Liverpool's 2-0 home success on the final matchday. Goals from Jari Litmanen and Emile Heskey secured a result that propelled the English team above Roma in the rankings and into the knockout stages. There the Merseysiders lost 4-3 on aggregate to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the quarter-finals.

Overall, Liverpool have hosted Italian opposition on five occasions, winning three and losing two. In Italy, the Reds have won two, drawn one and lost four of seven visits which include two finals against Italian teams.

Excluding Heysel, the English outfit have registered one home win and two away defeats versus Juventus. The sides faced off in the first round of the 1965/66 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup where a Gianfranco Leoncini goal gave the Turin club a narrow lead to take to Anfield. It was to prove insufficient as strikes from Liverpool's Chris Lawler and Geoff Strong gained a 2-1 aggregate triumph. The Reds advanced to the final only to lose 2-1 to BV Borussia Dortmund at Hampden Park.

Having defeated Roma in the 1983/84 European Cup final at Rome's Stadio Olimpico, Liverpool played UEFA Cup Winners' Cup winners Juventus in the UEFA Super Cup. The match was staged at Turin's Stadio Comunale on 16 January 1985, and goals in either half from Zbigniew Boniek gave the Italian team a 2-0 victory.

Given their regular Champions League involvement, Juve have been frequent visitors to England, having faced Premiership opposition on six occasions in the last eight seasons. Their most recent engagements came in 2002/03 when the Bianconeri took on both Newcastle United FC and Manchester United FC. Juve beat Newcastle 2-0 at the Delle Alpi with Alessandro Del Piero scoring twice, but lost 1-0 at St James' Park. Both clubs progressed to the second group phase where Newcastle exited, but Juventus advanced despite losing home and away to Manchester United.

Juventus then qualified for the final by overcoming FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF in the knockout stages. However, they would lose the endgame on penalties to AC Milan at Old Trafford.

In total, Juventus have played 14 matches away to English teams with two wins, four draws and eight defeats. Their last victory in England came in the 1996/97 campaign when they beat Manchester United home and away in the Champions League group stage. Alen Bokšic scored the only goal in Turin while a Del Piero penalty divided the sides in Manchester. Juve subsequently lost to Dortmund in the final. At home, meanwhile, the Bianconeri have won eleven, drawn one and lost three against English rivals.

Anfield awaits emotional encounter
Monday, 4 April 2005
By Simon Hart in Liverpool

Fabio Capello's talk of the special atmosphere of Anfield during his pre-match press conference will have evoked memories of many a memorable European night at Liverpool FC's famous home.

Poignant evening
Another one awaits on Tuesday as his Juventus FC side come to town on an evening that will be rich with emotion. Liverpool and Juventus are meeting for the first time since the 1985 European Champions' Cup final at Heysel - an occasion blackened by the death of 39 fans - and listening to Capello and his Liverpool counterpart Rafael Benítez speak on the eve of this UEFA Champions League quarter-final, the shared desire to produce an occasion memorable for sporting reasons was evident.

'Wonderful atmosphere'
"Anfield more than any other English stadium has an atmosphere that can really carry the team," said Capello. "To get a result we will have to be focused, committed and play with a lot of character. There is a wonderful atmosphere here and I am proud to be coach of the Juventus side that is playing Liverpool 20 years on from the Heysel tragedy. The best way to put that night behind us will be to play a good match."

Positive thinking
Benítez, albeit in fewer words, said much the same: "The most important thing is to talk about football, about positive things and about the future." The Spaniard is justified in positive thoughts too, having seen his side move within a point of fourth-placed Everton FC in the Premiership last weekend after defeating Bolton Wanderers FC, their third win in four matches.

Question of consistency
Consistency has escaped Liverpool for much of Benítez's first season in England and he himself knows that, in this respect, his team cannot compare with that of Capello, a man whose methods he once studied during a visit to Milanello, the training ground of AC Milan.

'Special spirit'
"We know we need to be more consistent, more aggressive and to play with as high a tempo as possible," said Benítez. The Spaniard cited in mitigation the fact of being a "new manager in a different country" but he is certainly well versed in winning in Europe - as he proved with Valencia CF - and Capello is too canny to underestimate a team he believes play with a "special spirit" in the Champions League.

Alonso included
Liverpool are again without the cup-tied Fernando Morientes and Mauricio Pellegrino, meaning Sami Hyypiä will join Jamie Carragher in central defence, but they can also call on striker Milan Baroš, presently suspended in the Premiership. Also returning is the fit-again Jerzy Dudek while Xabi Alonso, sidelined since late December, could be among the substitutes.

Crucial target
Juventus's formidable home form means a good result here is key for Liverpool against opponents with just two wins from 15 visits to England. "They are very, very strong at home, don't concede goals and have a lot of good players," said Benítez. "They can score at any moment. We need to win and, if possible, to win with a clean sheet."

Clean sheets
Keeping clean sheets is something Juventus do better than anyone else, conceding just twice in eight Champions League matches. With the postponement of all football in Italy last weekend, however, they have not played since 19 March, and Capello is worried they may have "lost perhaps a little continuity".

Tacchinardi suspended
David Trezeguet's swollen ankle means he should start on the bench and Marcelo Zalayeta has a back problem but Pavel Nedved and Emerson should be fit to play in midfield, where Alessio Tacchinardi is suspended.

Is it me, or does Nedved look like he has put on some weight?

Anyways, it's going to be a difficult match today and we need to score an away goal. If everything goes according to plan we should even be able to edge out a victory, hopefully pulling a Milan against Man United this past month.

As Jeeks would say, may the force be with us.
