BFG in particular is like a deer caught in headlights whenever Arsenal are being countered, except he moves more like sloth then an agile deer.

True, though it's often rather unfair to blame them, once they're 2 CBs against 3 attackers running at them on full pace it's difficult for any player to stop them and look elegant. The real fault often lies either with the guy losing the ball, or with the general setup allowing for such a poor setup with 8 players commited to the offense.

Not that Mertesacker's characteristics wouldn't make him one of the worst players for the job though.

To me, the crazy thing is Wenger almost seems obvious to how his tactics are so bad for the squad he has at his disposal, particularly on the defensive side. You mentioned Mertesacker. Wenger just doesn't have the tools or players to play how he wants to play but he doesn't bend, doesn't adjust and he watches his team left exposed constantly. Especially by tactical clubs in Europe.
