Yeah. UEFA changed the rules after Liverpool won the tournament in 2005. Liverpool finished outside the top 4 and won the competition, presenting UEFA with a dilemma. They decided that Liverpool as champions must be present, but since this incident was unprecedented, the 4'th placed team was also granted qualification. Both Liverpool, and the 4'th placed team started in the final round of qualifiers that season, I believe. After that, UEFA decided to amend the rules and regulations as such, so that if the winner of the CL finishes outside the top 4, the 4'th place team goes directly to the Europa League.

@Gabriel Fuck Chelsea :p I still want Arsenal and Newcastle in the competition next season. They are more worthy than you, and they have more amiable players.

Specially Ramires and Ivanovic.

Essien will take a place in midfield along Mikel, lampard and Mata. Probably Kalou or Torres will play too, Drogba is obvious.

Ivanovic's loss means we'll have to use Bosingwa at RB and Cahill alongside Luiz and Cole.

Cahill might also miss it, depending on whether his hamstring injury is serious or not.

They are going to have to play with this defense if Cahill misses it:

Bosingwa-Ivanovic-Luiz-Cole

Not good enough imo.
We're banking on Cahill to make it.

Ivanovic is suspended too. If Cahill doesn't make it, I guess Essien or Romeu will play CB.

Ya, after today, we might even win this shit. Still I don't care if we don't. With the squad we have being in the final is overachieving as fuck.
I'm sorry to say this but you will get steamrolled by either Bayern or Madrid. These two teams are not uni-dimensional like Barca, they actually can have a plan B and they also have excellent long distance shooters(Robben, Schweinsteiger, Ribery, Ronaldo, Di Maria, etc.) which Barca lack. Counter-attacking football might work but I just can't see you be able to deal with their wingers.

I'm not high on expectations about winning it (we might aswell could have had a fair chance with a complete squad) but every dog has it's day.

We'll see next month.

you actually have a very good squad, the players were just missing proper guidance under the right manager.

If Cahill and Luiz make it for the final, I think Chelsea have a very good shot at winning it, even if Ramires and Ivanovic will be missed (Terry and Meireles not so much imo) ... Essien would come in handy in that game as he would probably gain in shape by then too.

The game today should have proven that anything is possible. I would not count out this chelsea side in a 90 min battle for that triphy.
