* Only those with 20 goals or more
** Only those with 8 goals or more

Surprising to see that Van Nistelrooy wasn't scoring in knock-outs and he was scoring all his goals in the group stages. Also note that the July and August qualifiers aren't counted in the above numbers. It's only for CL groups and CL knock-out stages.
Lol, insanely fascinating knockout figures, Messi is ridicolous, almost half in playoffs. In this rate, how long do you think it will take for him to get most CL goals? (not withstanding long term injuries).

Messi will need 4-5 seasons.

As for half of his goals being scored in play-offs, it's indeed fascinating, but considering how far Barca goes in play-offs, it turns out that they play more knockout matches than group matches (6 in the groups, 7 in knockouts). In the recent past, when two group stage matches were played (12 matches, 2x6) and only 5 knockout matches in total (starting from 1/4's, the semis and the final) it was normal that those guys then, like Sheva, Raul, Del Piero, Ruud etc scored more in the groups than in the knockouts.

Indeed true. Knew that. But mainly its fascinating he STEPS UP so consistently. Almost half in a do or die knockout rounds is impressive (consistenly scores, takes the team to final, then Eto'o scores in em, been ze set up), despite the superiority of his team and how often they play in CL. Everyone in that list has like atleast 10 CL seasons, but it didnt matter much to him, in outdoing most of them.

And yeah, think around 4-5 seasons too, even if Barca take a sudden dip in quality and dont go far or such in couple of seasons, I can imagine he will do enough damage in groupstages to quickly rise in the goal chart ranks.

Rooney too has better numbers in the later stages than in the groups.

23 goals in CL, 13 of which in the knockouts.
P.S: Ronaldo too has good numbers, 13 out of 28.

Do guys like Rooney play that many games in the groups these days?

Top teams seem to play a reserve team in half the games now.

IN the last 2 games maybe, Man U I seen use some backups. But Barca and Real didnt rest their aces, or not fully, they were subbed in on last games I think.

Not all of them as Osman said, soon as 1st place in a group is assured Fergie often uses younger players and squad players.

More importantly, some of them don't give a lot in the groups even if they play. Frank Lampard for example has 18 goals in CL and 13 of them are in KO stages while only 5 are in the groups.

I hope he stays injury free his entire carear and goes on to (as he probably will) become the greatest player of all time.

Even if I think Ronaldo is best right now, the only difference is the coaches of the clubs both play for.

If Ronaldo played for Barca he'd had 50+ goals as well.

Its retarded to wish injury on another player.

I wish someone tackles you from behind and injure your meniscus + your knee ligament while having your ankle bruised.

    That's just mean.

The other bits are fair enough, but a bruised ankle is taking things too far.
