Cheers, ZAF...I am enjoying your input also. Quality debate from folks who clearly care about the club and are wanting to suggest solutions, not solely sadness and grief.

And I agree...that the 3 needs to ALL be in decent form, especially Gio and Camo, on the flanks. Lets say above all others, Camo, as behind him is by far our weaker defensive position. As you say, when Camo is invisible or in poor form, we literally give away the whole right flank.

I would be happy to see us adopting 2 in attack. Which would have to be DP and Trez.

Diego MUST play, he has the finest first touch of all our players. Momo and Marchisio and Camo I would also demand to start.

Only two of the DMs can play. Melo/Momo/Marchisio. Momo is the only constant definite, because he is a monster...

How can we fit both Diego and Camo into a formation with two up front?

the only way is the diamond. Marchiso is more than capable of playing on the left of a midfield diamond, and has few fewer poor games than the present Melo.

I guess I agree, its the only thing left to try. I also think that Marchisio is better at holding a position than ALL of the other DMS. His all round game is tardelli like, not Momo like.
If all our DM/CMs are fit the first one I would choose is Marchisio. Because he is the best al-rounder. If everyone is fit we can definitely play a diamond 4-4-2 with Diego upfront, Sissoko at the back, Camo at the right and Marchisio at the left.
Brazzo is someone who can play both on the left as well.
The other solution is as I mentioned a flexible 4-3-1-2 which goes to 4-1-3-2 during offensive pressure. Same players can play both the diamond and this.

The downside of 4-2-3-1 is that with our chronic injury problems it won't be a formation we can play strong with given any combination of players. While a diamond or the flexible 4-3-1-2 can survive well providing not more of 2 of the 4 Del Piero, Diego, Giovinco and Camoranesi are fit. If all are fit Giovinco, Diego and Del Piero will rotate on the assistant striker and the AM positions.

This why the team can adapt to the formation and play well with it whether it was the first 11 or not. Changing formations alot really affects the team negatively.

The advantage of playing the diamond that it is not too far away from the flat 4-4-2 which is a formation we are quite used to. It can also be easily switched to a flat 4-4-2 whenever is needed by subbing the AM with an LM like De Cegli or Brazzo.

If Momo stays in front of the defense then we're losing the quality that makes him different and better than the others.
He doesn't have the discipline nor the characteristics to play in front of the defense only. His main quality is the capability to be everywhere and cover everything. To pop up where you don't expect him and win the ball or stop an attack.
Just watch us play and how static we are. Without Momo being the only lively player in the midfield, most of the time we'll have 0 options to pass to.
Such a shame that his passing is bad, because if he was good there, he'd have been the best DM in the world. But if you take away his characteristic that makes him so special, then you'll get a pretty ordinary player who sits in front of the defense.

It's not just a coincidence or bad coaching. The managers who don't play him in front of the defense (Benitez, Ranieri, Ferrara) all know what's Momo's main strength and they're using it. Far away from our goal, Momo feels the freedom to do what he does the best. To make fouls, to do risky tackles that many times work but sometimes don't.
Closer to our goal he won't be able to do any of that without the risk of getting many cards or giving away dangerous free kicks. Plus, we'll be counter attacked, or just attacked, much more without him stopping the opponents' attacks in midfield already.
With his radius of movement, it will be a crime to play him so deep in front of our defense.
The best of Momo, I have seen, whether at Liverpool or Juve, is when he roams between the defence and midfield, only moving forward in flurries, because his shooting, whilst powerful, if near useless, and his passing is the worst of any of our midfielders (though Poulsen isn't much better, and lacks the ability to repair the damage he does, as easily as Momo). He is not a creative destroyer, he is just a destroyer.

When we have players in midfield, like Melo, Marchisio, Camo, Tiago...who are all technically superior to momo, on the ball, it is better to have him where he naturally wants to be, between defence and midfield. as a defensive midfielder...his main job, is hassle, hack, block, chase.

The further up the pitch he roams, his massive defensive strengths, turn quickly to profligate offensive weaknesses.

Some people have different ideas of the job and even position of defensive midfielders. To me, its a midfielder, who major strength and duty is DEFEND, COVER, HASSLE, PLAY SIMPLE pASSES to our BALL PLAYING MIDFIELDERS...which is what Momo was born for.

Poulsen has done OK, this season, in patches, but remains a massive waste of money, and his form seems brighter than it truly is because of the abysmal form of those around him. I wish him luck, as I would love to see him prove as dominant as how he performs for the Danish team. At Juve, he has NEVER come close to the often, Midfield Leader who can pass player he is for his country.

Momo, to me, always plays a defensive midfielder. thats his game...He defends the midfield. And Defends the Defence.
