Thats harsh. He's a sporting director not an oracle. No one can predict how a signing goes, its all based on past performance and based on that, evaluation of the future. He was at fault for only two things, overpaying for Melo (which was almost unavoidable considering that he was very good with Brazil during that time) and not getting enough cover for the back. Its the coach's job to motivate and bring the best out of the player. In hindsight we can blame Secco for everything, but a huge majority over here hailed the signings. He cannot be blamed for our current mess. The players, coach and Al-Qaeda share the blame for that.

I understand where you're coming from but you have to appreciate that this is not (or shouldn't be) a simple process of go watch a season or two and then decide whether the player should be bought for that kind of money. It should be something much deeper than that where you delve into his attitude, the way he likes to play,is he adaptable , interactions with teammates, how does he handle pressure and the list goes on and on. This complete evaluation is done to check whether this player can come and fit in with this team for the long run. I am sure something along these lines was done but that is why Secco should take some of the blame here. We as fans watch a lot of games and see this wonderful player but we don't usually go into the finer details but Secco should because he has more experience and its his job. Surely he would/should have more insight on a player fits in than we do and that is primarily why he should be held accountable as well.

i think seccos job was the negotiation only, but not deciding if melo was a good player. there are scouts that evaluate a players strength and playing style, who then gather information and perhaps video material and give it not to secco, but to the coach in charge who then decides if he wants him. you do not really think that secco does buy players based on what HE likes ?

if ciro did not study the information of the scouts good enough (and perhaps believed the hype around melo back then) than it is ciros fault. if the information gathered was not accurate, than it was the scouts fault. if there was not enough information ciro could surely have asked for more. i can not think of a mistake by secco here ... he had to overpay because fiorentina is a direct rival and they had the fixed clause in the contract implemented just a few month before.

If its Secco's job only to do the negotiations then he certainly the wrong man for the job as we should have a business person there such as Blanc who actually has the experience and could negotiate better deals for us.

The way I thought it worked was with Secco (with the scouting team reporting to him) handling the smaller details about the player and then sharing it with ciro but the decision is made between them. I am not completely blaming Secco here but I am not completely blaming Ciro as well because Secco should/does have a big say in the transfers as his position stipulates.

Anyway, I will reserve full judgment about the campaign until the end of the season.

What's Ciro's fault he can not do anything about or correct or alter. Here I'm talking of his evident shortcomings as a manager at this point in his career.

As for the spending never mind who is to blame it's a collective blame, the damage has been done, and that's not to say they aren't two good players but we overpaid on both substantially. And I don't think Melo was needed anyway. Considering the obscene amounts spent in the last 3 years or so, someone should tell me the last bonafide, proven on every level, unanimous top 10-15, world class footballer Juventus purchased? 50 million on two players, neither of whom is classed in that category.

The point is that a WC man-manager like Guus Hiddink can compensate for a teams failings while also making sure that nobody get's lazy or depressed a la GiGi.

We have many problems other that Ciro yes, but he can't solve them, only mother Guus can.

Some reasons why he is still here:
-Our season is already wasted and changing him with someone else wont change much, but lose us prestige points for sacking coaches early. (and mock our history)

I see your point, but I really can't see why did the board put themselves in such position at first place.

From what you say, I gather that they planned since day one Ferrara to be their pawn and scapegoat if things start going badly, so instead of blaming the board for not making this team strong enough, people will blame Ferrara.

But ask yourself, how strong our team really is? If we didn't have Ferrara now but a (much) better coach, were we going to be out from CL and 6 pts behind Inter? Probably not. We were still going to play CL football and we'd have been at least on par with Inter (a better coach was going to win at least half of those matches we didn't win in serie A this season). If we had a better coach there wasn't going to be a need to find scapegoats because things were going to be fine as they were.

With a bad coach, both the board and the coach are under pressure and are being criticized. With a good coach the board would have been praised for the good mercato and the coach for managing the team well.
So why did our board do what they did then?
