Ferrara explains first defeat

Ciro Ferrara admits he is taking his first career defeat “badly,” but holds his hands up to confess “Palermo were better.”

The Bianconeri were unbeaten so far this season and, with his two games in charge at the end of last term too, the Coach had never previously lost.

“I'm taking my first defeat badly! Unfortunately we don't have the chance to get right back out there, but I knew the first loss would eventually come and there is no 'good' time for it to happen.

“Nothing went right for us tonight, so there's no point looking for excuses. Palermo played better, worked harder and clearly won the game. There are no alibis.

“We made so many mistakes and as a consequence ran many risks. We leave Sicily disappointed, aware we did badly and that Palermo deserved the victory.

“I'm disappointed, but not worried. We have to keep going, even if I'll be without most of my players over the international break.

“We will keep our heads up and return to the gritty and humble approach we had at the start of the season.”

Diego was substituted, just as he was midweek in the 0-0 with Bayern Munich, although the Brazilian did hit the crossbar from a free kick.

“Diego was marked very closely and I made a change because I realised we were struggling and had to readjust,” explained Ferrara.

“We tried to make more of the flanks and the height of Amauri, [David] Trezeguet and [Vincenzo] Iaquinta. We put pressure on them in the second half, but never created real danger.”

Fabio Cannavaro, Hasan Salihamidzic, Tiago Mendes and Momo Sissoko were out for this game, but the former Liverpool man should return soon after a long-term lay-off.

“Sissoko is certainly an important player who can give his contribution, but I wouldn't say he could resolve the problems we've had in recent weeks. We need to be solid again and keep the right shape at all times.”

Juventus are now two points off joint leaders Inter and Sampdoria and level on terms with Fiorentina.

“I would not let this defeat sully our ideas. I have a great squad at my disposal, there is a long way to go before the end of the season. Last week we had a slight advantage over Inter, now it's the other way round.

I now worry that the team senses that Ciro doesn't have much of a clue, given his subs and all. And with that lack of credibility, the team is going to play without any leadership from here on out. Cannavaro is out, Del Piero is on the bench, and Gigi can only do so much from goal.

This is solely Ferrara's fault. he needs to prepare the team better, pick the better players, and not insist with starting out of form players, and more importantly he better starts do something at match time instead of watching, he should take the off form players.. ffs which manager used three formation in one match? Did this ever happen before?
Agreed with everything above. His total inexperience is showing and it is the reason I wanted a more experienced coach at the helm. as Cronios would say, my worst fears are becoming true.

we are in a crisis make no mistake. 4 games without a win is not how a top team contends for trophies.

Actually Canna is back soon. He was on the bench today.

Apart from Poulsen and Amauri, who else does Ferrara have to start?

Those guys shouldn't play, but come on apart from that, he started the right guys. All of you would have made similar decisions. He started Zebina, had the defense that makes sense, but it didn't work out. It happens.

I blame the morons at the front office for not addressing the defensive issue and thinking an old and weary Cannavaro can take us to the promised land. Fabio being injured 50% does not help us, and yes, don't tell me this is something unexpected at this age.

But yes, Ciro was horrible today.

he is being really pussy, playing defensive football against every team including Bologno, Livorno and so on. He is putting big boys as attackers so we could score from set pieces, and playing poulsen it's just retarded (I heard this word around 100 time tonight in this forum)...
We should play 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-1-2 with Gio as SS until Alex comes back or, 4-4-2 with Gio taking Nedved's place and Camo on the right hand side, I don't know where to put Diego!

Good point. We pretty much need to rejuvenate the whole backline next year. I really hope that Secco and co wont count on Grosso too long. We need a new LB. But we might need a new CD and a new RB also. Add to that a new forward and maybe a new RW and.... oh jesus. :sergio: :snoop:

We play 4-3-1-2 for 45 minutes and it obviously doesn't work. Actually, it was obviously a disaster.
So what does he do? He doesn't change shit.

Then at minute 60-65 he takes off Diego and switches to 4-4-2. It doesn't work in the 5 minutes or so and then he changes it again, this time to 4-3-3.

His face and actions tonight were screaming: I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT TO DO.

P.S: Actually, during most of this match we played 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1. No-one knew where to play or what to do. Sometimes Chiellini played as a left winger, sometimes Poulsen played as a right winger and Grosso was our attacking midfielder.
It was a total chaos. Nobody knew what to do.
I am not pissed at all to Ferrara, I still love him a lot as a person, but it was a huge mistake I guess to start with Ferrara this season. Few weeks back I was excited and drooled about the way we were playing, I appreciate that and all, but experience is needed right now, we can't stay like this forever. We need to fight for the scudetto and to make impact in CL, I don't believe (anymore) that Ferrara will do this, not just this match, we are watching his mistakes match after another. He has one good formation, but I am afraid he doesn't have the experience to read the opponents' tactics or the solution to stop them.

I know it is very early to ask his head, but I am afraid I am seeing the same thing I saw with Ranieri, we are wasting time with Ferrara, he is not ready yet, and we don't have the time to wait him to get the experience with us. I would search for managers, and wait until the best one of them is available and hire him that time.

I can't blame the board for anything, this year they did good transfers (except the fullbacks part, I knew this will cost us), so we do have a very good team, the team we had were not any worse than Genoa's, Bologna's, Palermo's or Bordeaux's. These results are not acceptable, and it has to do with the tactics and the approach to the game, and not the available player's quality..

I will not bother and find my old posts, but yeah I thought the same way you did, I was so unsure about hiring Ferrara, and specially for this season. We should have picked more suitable one, I guess this Guardiola incident affected many of the clubs in the world (to take risks on young/fresh local coaches), Milan paid the price, and I am afraid we will pay it sooner, hopefully I am wrong, and will laugh at myself later for this post.
