To pass any constitutional amendment, to change the name of the constitution, to fulfill the objective Mantu and co. are pushing for, you need two thirds of the 109-member Senate. That is, we, the people, the anti third-termers only need the backing of 36 Senators if they want to end this coming nightmare...

Friends, if we want a vibrant democracy that's built on ideas and not personalities, if we want to prevent our country from being captured by a future tyrants that will kill our democracy, if we want to say that Nigeria can never be fixed in four years, eight years, 12 years but change will last for as long as Nigeria exists, if we want to say that Obasanjo's reforms can be continued under a team of younger Nigerians that haven't been around since independence -- then we need 36 Senators to vote "no" for the third term.

Friends, if we want Nigeria to say to Africa: "Don't only do only what we say but do what we do," and if we want to say the following to Baba: "Thank you very much, you've tried your best, you've done some great things, but now you can rest"--then we need 36 Senators to vote "no" when the real battle gets to the National Assembly.

36 Senators. 36 "Profiles in Courage for our time."

This campaign isn't about North, South, South South or South West. This campaign isn't about Christianity, Sharia, power shift or "recource control." Our campaign is about building a new Nigeria that is in touch with the world. A Nigeria that's home to a multitude of ideas that will together make us great. Not a teleguided Nigeria under the direction of a patriarch.

We're sick and tired of this unease. We're sick and tired of the hairbrained argument that only one man can steer our ship. We're not tiny Singapore in search of a Nanny. We're like India: multicultural, multi-religious, democratic, crazy, and eminently cabapble of capturing the attention of the world with our ingenuity. We're a big time player--at least the seed is there to make us one. We don't need Nasiru Mantu, Tony Anenih, and Jerry Gana to tell us that.

Friends, we want a Nigeira that's run by rules. Not an improvised Nigeria charachterized by shifting the goal posts. We want a serious country that cares about public opinion, and not the opinions of courtiers serving any government in power.

    36 Senators.

If you're a senator and you have a conscience, if your a senator afraid to be seen taking a sign, do not fear. You can join your colleagues that said "no" in Rivers a few days ago: Udoma Udo Udoma; Bello Maitama; Farouk Bello-Bunza; Abdulaziz A. Ibrahim; Chukwumerije; Mamora; Dahiru Umar; Ahmed Ibrahim; Usman K. Umar; Baba Tella; Bode

This was sent to me by a friend...

I received the following email on the Darfur crisis from Amelia Field who writes on behalf of Human Rights First. Please do give a thought to it.

We don't need to remind you that in Darfur where people are being systematically killed and driven from their homes, immediate intervention is critical.

We're writing you in hopes that you will tell your readers about Human Rights First's important new petition. We're looking for 200,000 caring people to "stand in" for those who have been murdered, raped and displaced. See (and sign!) the petition here.

We have also made a short and powerful Flash movie that we invite you to watch and link to alongside the petition.

The petition calls for a high-level envoy, appointed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, to reenergize the peace process. That means, in particular, bringing all of the stakeholders in Darfur to the negotiating table – something that is not happening right now.
Darfur is a crucial issue to your readers, and I hope you will spread the word about the petition.

    Peace

Did you know that it takes exactly 13 minutes at 80km/h to go from Mobil Bus Stop at Victoria Island to Ajah Bus Stop? This timing was done on the morning of Tuesday 21 March 2006 between 0812 and 0825 hours in a friend's car. Because of the confusion surrounding whether there would or there would not be a census, all three of us (myself, Lanre and Uche) had gone to our respective places of work, all on the island to confirm. Happily, there was no work and we were able to go back to our little bunker in Ajah to get this incredible stretch of rest which I am now sick of. A lot happened during the period of the census, and my thoughts as to what to actually write are still jumbled up, but I will make an effort to fill your screen...

On Wednesday, I left Ajah for my uncle's place at Magodo, the other end of Lagos. Who knows, that may have been a blessing in disguise as I got counted on Saturday. For your information, I was not counted during the last census (due to a bit of recalcitrance on my part which I'd rather not go into). Why do I say it was a blessing that I have been counted? Because on my return to Ajah yesterday, I found that no one there has been counted. This is for an area that covers at least Ajah down to Abraham Adesanya Estate, and probably beyond. An area that I would estimate contains at least half a million people! Is there a chance of their being counted today which is the last day of the extended census? I sincerely doubt it if I am to go by what I was told by a colleague at work this morning. He claims that census officials got to his area in Ejigbo, took one look at the estate and decided that there were too many people for them to count!

Reuben Abati in yesterday's Guardian wrote a fine article on why the census will not be successful and he was only echoing Jeremy Weate's article in Naijablog. This census has failed already, because there was a lot of insincerity on the part of the Federal Government. Personally, I saw a lot of stranded census officials on Wednesday, and all of them had the same complaint: lack of materials. Haba!

One great piece of news to come out in the last one week was Babangida finally taking a stand on the 3rd term issue. I was thrilled by the retired general whose influence is something to be taken seriously, coming out openly to say “I will run in 2007, and there will be no 3rd term.” I wonder what Baba will do about this one, abi will EFCC go after Maradona? We shall soon know.

Meantime, another interesting thing happened during the last week. An acquaintance of mine was nabbed by EFCC for 419. Rather sad story when you consider that his parents are rich, I wonder what his problem was really. To be honest, I can't say I really feel sorry for him, but I ain't gloating either, this is because I am not a saint. Like every other person, I have committed my own 'crimes' one way or the other, and in my case maybe some of my crimes are slightly more serious than those committed by a lot of other people, but I haven't been found out, so I shouldn't be making noises. Why I am commenting on this is that I keep wondering why is it that so many boys go into something that obviously has no future? Look at Ajudua. Look at Anajemba. The list is endless. I'll write more about the 419 thing some other time, for now let me get back to work...

Juventus meet Arsenal at Highbury this evening in what is a season defining match for both clubs, Arsenal because the UCL is their only remaining chance for silverware this season, Juve because the UCL has been our stated objective all season.

Much has been made of the return of Patrick Vieira to Highbury, but I feel that the media (as is usual with them) are overdoing it. Paddy spent 9 years at Arsenal, won every English trophy with them and has nothing to prove. He was already becoming jaded there (look at Raul in Madrid), so it was best for him that he move. It will be in very bad taste if any Arsenal fan boos him tonight. However, Vieira demands good behaviour: "I expect to get a warm welcome from the fans," he screeched today before admitting he'll feel a pang of jealousy when he sees Cesc Fabregas romping in what was once his bed. "When you play for a team for nine years you can't not be emotional," sniffed the forlorn Frenchman, before whimpering nostalgically: "I enjoyed many good moments in that stadium."

The media seem to have forgotten that Vieira isn't the only one facing his old flame, of course. Thierry Henry endured a seven-month fling with the Old Lady seven years ago - time that, according to Arsenal's young Italian striker Arturo Lupoli, "he now considers a total waste." (Sorry Thierry, you just weren't good enough for us).

Then there's the case of Zlatan Ibrahimovich, who could have become an Arsenal player in 2003, when he was still at Ajax, but instead responded to Wenger's offer of a trial by fuming: "I am Zlatan. I don't do trials." Characteristic confidence (or is it arrogance) from a man who says the only thing that can stop him becoming the best player in the world is serious injury. Such as an exploded head, perhaps?

As a Juve fan for the better part of 2 decades now, it is very easy for me to say: 'Forza Juve, we will bash them...' but truth be told, I am running scared. And I will give my reasons.

Granted we are virtually running away with lo scudetto, but the way we have played against top quality opposition in recent games leaves a lot to be desired. For crying out loud, we barely scrapped through to this round against Bremen, a club that on paper we should have buried! Against Milan in Serie A, we just managed to hold them to a goaless draw in our own stadium even though they were down a man for the last 15 minutes! And finally we dropped points against Roma on Saturday. That particular game left a sour taste in my mouth. Why?

Because Capello decided to start Alex who wasn't fully fit, Alex duly got injured, will not play today. To make a bad story worse, Pavel got sent off , and we had to play the whole second half with 10 men. This introduces the tiredness factor in today's game. And to cap a bad preview all up, Arsenal's game with Portsmouth same day was called off due to a water-logged pitch!

But what the hell is the matter with Portsmouth? How can a Premiership club be having a waterlogged pitch? They should be relegated for low stadium standards! But then, I digress...

The bottom line is this: la vecchia signora shot ourselves in the foot on Saturday, and I pray that it doesn't come to haunt us. And I hope that Don Fabio's confidence is not misplaced. Our record against English teams isn't too good...

Someone asked me how I watch Serie A. Channel 102 on DSTv show live Serie A games, and I gather that NTA has also started for those of you based here in Lagos.

Now to move away from football...

Israel is holding her elections today. Coming soon after the Hamas victory in Palestine, I hope that Khadima would win so that we can have peace in that region. I think Khadima is the only party in Israel that would be able to talk to the Hamas government.

There would be a solar eclipse in Naija tomorrow, so don't be scared people.

Meanwhile what is the matter with Microsoft? They have delayed the release of their latest OS again! This is like the millionth delay of the OS which was once called Longhorn. Funny that it is taking Microsoft so long to get their security issues in order while the Open Source world has addressed the same issues. For crying out loud...

Dateline: 1945 hours 28 March 2006. Chxta was stuck at work on the 13th Floor of UBA House Marina (E-payments Department) with his boss Ernest Uduje, and Ike Kanu, a manager in UBA. We were trying to figure out why the UBA VPN is simply refusing to accept e-payments over a secure network. You see, there is no point doing e-payments if your network is not secure, so it just has to work...

    Correction.

Dateline: 1945 hours 28 March 2006. Ernest Uduje and Ike Kanu were brainstroming trying to figure out why the UBA VPN was not accepting e-payments over a secure network, while Chxta was sitting with them, silently cursing them, all who gave birth to them, and Kunle Adeniji, the UBA staffer who got us into the mess in the first place, and promptly left at 1900 in order to get home on time and watch the same match that Chxta was now obviously going to miss. This state of affairs continued up until 2025 hours when the first text message arrived. In total I have received 53 text messages since that message...

The first message read: Goal 2 Arse, Fabregas (39). Shit!!!. It came from Ade Adene, a Juventino like myself, whom I had sent an SOS to update me on the situation since I wouldn't be watching the game. He did his best, and I can't after the match seriously say that I envy him based on what I have heard of our performance so far...

The second text message came from Mayowa Adekoya, a colleague of mine who said: Told u men, we spanking ur butts.... Hope it continues. That text was the first of a deluge of texts from Arsenal fans which I can't be arsed to type, but I will go through a choice few before making a little comment about the performance based on the report I read on Soccernet.com.

Two of the more outstanding texts came last night, the first from Osas Iyasere went: Old lady comes to Highbury to suck our dicks. Forza Arsenal. That text for me is so distasteful and is very much the work of a brainless cunt. Osas, if you are sexually deprived why not go and find an asewo for service? What are you sending obscenities to me for? Besides, the last time I saw you (a year ago now), you were screaming Up Chelsea. Before that you were screaming Up ManU. So what happened? At least I am stable with my club, not jumping from club to club depending on who is doing well at the moment. Then what is this Forza Arsenal? How ignorant can you get? Forza is for Italian teams. Get a life and try and learn more about football. The other outstanding text was a benign one from Andrew Enenmoh who said, Gunners 4 life. The old lady went down. I cant really beef u because of ur mail of dis morning. How u dey? At least someone remembers that I had earlier written of my fears concerning the game, so what is all the gloating about?

Ayo Soebi said, no excuses, we whipped u good. True, Ayo and I will say enjoy your glory. I won't support Arsenal against any other team except they get to the final and are facing Milan. For crying out loud, I would support Chelski against Milan, so nothing new there. Julum Nwanze, my baby brother simply sent this: hehehe... I owe him a beating next time I see him, problem is that he is a head taller than I am and he gyms! Then again, he is still full of youthful exuberance, while my joints are beginning to creak from age!

Peter Ikenebomeh said, cheta i lost a lot of money on juve's head and a lot of arses are gloating at me. find a better team to support. dat was d worst display ive seen in dis champions league. Pete, I never asked u to bet on Juve. We've known each other 20 odd years and while you've been a ManU fan for some 8 years now, I've been a Juve fan for 22 odd years now. Why should I change teams? Sorry we put up such a piss poor display, and I am embarrassed as well, and saddened at the same time, but then again, I clearly stated yesterday that we haven't been playing well at all, and from what all the reports say, it shows. You need to visit the forum Juventuz.com, and see how Juventini the world over are clamoring for Don Fabio's head.

Akachi Okoro said, Sorry ur team took such a trashin. Going forward tell them not to be so reckless when behind. They've killed the return leg for themselves. Now that text brings us to what should be in about 8 days time. Sorry to say, but based on what everyone at Juventuz says, even the most optimistic Juventini believe that we are out of it this year, so what can I who didn't watch the match say? We couldn't even get an away goal!

The Champions is over for us this season, so let us manage the scant consolation of lo scudetto number 29. Forza Juve.

As for all you Arsenal fans, abeg make my phone rest.

I am still finding this a little difficult to believe. On Saturday evening, I was waiting for my cousin to come pick me up from a friend's place near Silverbird Cinema. A few minutes after 1900, he called to inform me that he had a flat tyre at Bonny Camp Round-about and that I should take a bike and meet him up while he changes the tyre. I did that with a lot of trepidation. It was dark see, and knowing Lagos for what it is, I was afraid that some alaye boys would come and collect from us what belongs to them.

We were struggling to change the tyre in the dark (thank you Lagos for not maintaining your street lights) when suddenly a light shone on us. It was some kind hearted fellow who having spotted us, came over and left his lights on for us to change the tyre. What is more, he even came down and gave us a hand. His action made a tedious job easy for us, and saved us the potential harassment that would surely have happened had we continued in the dark. He said his name is Thank God.

I don't know what to say about that name, I never believed such a name to be real (an old classmate of mine bears the same name), but Mr. Thank God from Kogi State, who drives a 1984 vintage Mercede Benz 200 with plate number AS 664 AKD, you were a life saver when someone really needed one, and all I can say to you is Thank God you came around.

Looks like I haven't been around these parts for a while. Becoming too often...

As a day, yesterday started so brightly and ended so horribly. I can't think of too many other days in my entire life that have been worse than that. I was put through some major emotional stress which I'd rather not discuss until it pans out. Aside from the fact that work was shyte yesterday (thanks Bode Afolabi, Zenith Bank), someone very close told me something that made me want to cry (Lanre says I cried), so I am faced with the hard choice of whether to drop a very close friend who has become an integral part of my circle of friends and my life as well, or whether to swallow, bear and go on. We shall know in a few days, so let's keep all fingers crossed.

That bad day however, set the tone for today. I think I woke up on the wrong side of the bed on this my birthday. Funny how close some major birthdays are to me. Yesterday was Uju's birthday (she had a nice time, a little to my detriment), today is my birthday, today is also my sister's birthday (we are twins what do you expect!), tomorrow's Kayode's birthday (he was the one who dropped the bombshell), Saturday's my Uncle Ify's birthday, Saturday's also my mum's birthday (she turns 60 that day), next week has Nkiru, Godwin and Nosa. Wow!

Anyways, lest I deviate too much, I didn't sleep all that good because of Kayode's scud missile (something that I am itching to talk about, but I have to be patient until I have made confirmations), got up when PHCN (Problem Has Changed Name for those who didn't know) exercised their constitutional right at exactly 0354, then left for work at 0530. See, Lanre's car chose yesterday to develop a leak, Uche's car also chose yesterday to lock its gear (see what I am talking about when I say yesterday was horrible?). I got into a fight with some area boys at Ajah bus stop when they decided that they liked the look of my laptop bag. Some kind soul put a stop to that rubbish when it seemed they might have their way, then I got to work at 0601 (why is there no hold up when you need one?). I was the one who opened the office. Something I hate doing, and there I was all alone with my thoughts until Ami Okodugha walked in 32 minutes later...

First things first before going any further, I'd like to state here that based on the way things have gone for me in the last 18 hours or therabouts, I am pissed off with God. Bite me if you like for that, but it is the truth. It is frustrating when you put in so much prayer and try to stay on the straight and narrow, then you see other people who are not concerned about cutting a few corners getting ahead. Then some geezer comes and tells you that 'God's time is the best.' Cut me some slack. I have had a bad year on the average, and it just got worse. Thinking seriously of returning to my evil days...

Lest I sound like an ungrateful wretch, which maybe I am, I think I have to thank the following humans who have made life interesting in the last one year... Uche Anidobi (guy, try to like women), Lanre Badmus (for putting up with my kicking every evening), Aminu Bello (words of encouragement), Doro Bosini (wish you a happy married life), Tochukwu Ezeokafor (nice one man), Charles Ifinedo (be guided), Peter Ikenebomeh (thank God those Warri youths haven't gotten you), Oria Iyayi (best and most loyal pal a man can have), Seun Lawal (fixed me up when I was down), Ijeoma Nwagboso (for getting me addicted to Paloma), Bunmi Nwanze (provides me with a clear head and is extremely caring) , Nkechi Ogeah (ManU messed up against Ch€£$k¥), Akachi Okoro (I have disappointed him, but I will make it up), Kayode Olanipekun (not the Kayode with the scuds), Emeka Onyekonwu (try to learn the art of patience), Chiedu Onyido (my guy for life), Onyechi Ubaka (Forza Juve) Godwin Umoru (thanks for everything sir), Akpan Utande (vital intelligence provider), and Chippla Vandu (great read) . If there is anyone I forgot, it was inadvertent, my mind is in such a messed up state right now that I can't even think that straight.

Now my birthday is something that I never really celebrated, and over the years, I got used to people just ignoring me and celebrating with my sister, and that includes my friends. So Iwas pleasantly surprised when in my depression the texts started coming in... Ade Adene, Julum Nwanze, Nonso Nwanze, Oghale Ariawhorai, Mama, Obla Ogar, Andrew Enenmoh, Pearl Ezeokeke, Stella Hugbo, Ify Uraih, Chiedu Uraih, Emeka Onyekonwu, Boma Uadia (two people whose numbers I don't have: 08056513098, 08050351875), Nkiru Maka, Chiedu Onyido, Stephan from Juventuz (Stephan), Aaron from Juventuz (Enron), Tahir from Juventuz (Ze Tahir) and Kayode Babalola (yes, he is the one who dropped the scud, but he still found time to wish me a happy birthday, how nice of him). Thanks for remembering me y'all. I wish you all what you wish yourselves.

Please note, in much the same way I tend to forget my birthday, I also tend to forget other people's birthdays. Don't be offended people.

Meantime, since it's my birthday, I am demanding a new mobile. My phone has become a landline. The battery's all messed up! Over to you all...

I’ve had it up to my ears with people like Uche Anidobi, Aminu Bello, Ike Chukwumah and Akachi Okoro talking about how Juve paid bribes to win lo scudetto. All of you (and that includes people, newspapers, sports shows and websites) have succeeded in ruining what was once a credible sport. I love Serie A but the lure you have all helped create around the league has reduced it to a joke. No one made this much noise when when Robert Hoyzner brought German football to its knees. Before I go further though, I have to make it clear that I would have preferred the Champions League to lo scudetto, but having collected it on the last day of the season with Milan huffing and puffing against Roma and with all the scandals, this title (our 29th scudetto) is suddenly very sweet!

Ch€£$k¥ are dominating in England and no one is complaining. Bayern have won two straight in Germany, and no one coughed. Lyon have won five straight in France, and it is normal to all. The Old Firm have dominated Scotland uninterrupted since 1981, and nobody bats an eyelid! In other sports, the Yankees dominate baseball, yet no one blames the umpires. The Chicago Bulls were a dynasty in the NBA, and no one talked. Pete Sampras and Tiger Woods swept all before them in their sports, and was there a complaint?

Juve on the other hand take two scudetti in a row and suddenly blame needs to be placed somewhere...anywhere! Y'all have tried the referee talk, the steroid attempt, the little clubs are even lending a hand, now Moggi selecting refs? Why not just accept that Juventus are Italy’s strongest squad? This has become almost too childish to discredit...almost.

And yes, I am biased towards Juve. They've been my team since 1984!

This year however, I needed to satisfy my own curiosity. You can do the counting yourself as well... Here is a great starting point.

Is Juve really that dominant or is there some truth to the non-stop accusations? So I analyzed, and I wish you guys would too before making these accusations. I wondered if there were differences in disciplinary action between the big clubs. So I counted them. I counted 1 for every yellow and 2 for every red. I saw Inter had 70, Milan had 52, and Juve fell between the two with 61. In my opinion, over 38 games 9 cards don’t make a team win or loose the title!

So it definitely wasn’t a “bookings” thing. “Maybe Juve was getting a lot more penalties than the others”. So let's count. Juve scored a whopping 3 penalties all season, Inter 5, and Milan 9! These differences could alter the standings somewhat. Can we still say that Juve is being favoured though? We had the least; remarkably Milan is again in the best position. So let's ask ourselves “Is it possible that Juve has faced far fewer penalties than the others?” seeing as we have heard this claim in the past. So we count... Juve faced 3, Inter and Milan both faced 2. No real significant difference here but it certainly can’t be said that Juve are favoured seeing as their position is once again less favourable than Milan’s or Inter’s.

We all know there is more to this, so let’s at least try to count the times that points have been acquired dubiously. This is difficult to quantify since it is somewhat opinion based, but it comes up too often to be ignored. Remember that Del Piero goal that was offside against Udinese? That was a win for Juve that should have been a tie, I can admit it. That means Juve got an extra 2 points undeservingly that game. I also notice the tie against Cagliari that has been deemed corrupt because of the “questionable” 5 minutes of injury time needed to draw. Frankly, even Cagliari fans understood the 5 minutes. There were penalties (against Juve) and red cards that day that pushed the game farther into injury time, it happens. Let’s count it though, just to humour all the anti-Juventino. So we got an unjust point for a total of 3 extra points. Now to be fair, we have to mention the obvious penalty on Zlatan that the referee “didn’t see” at Chievo costing Juve a possible win. That day we took home 1 point and left 2 on the field. Milan scored two penalties against Roma on Sunday just so they could win and possibly
get the title if we slipped up. In the end our point surplus was a staggering 1 after 38 games.

Not a single refereeing decision all year cost either Inter or Milan points. Go ahead, try to bring up an example and I’m sure FIFA regulations will disagree. I did however, find a few occasions where the opposite occurred. Remember Milan’s dubious 5 minutes of injury time resulting in an Inzaghi goal? It was favouritism for Juve, why not Milan then? Chock up a 2 point surplus for Milan. Inter though is far worse. There are a number of questionable goals/penalties, and wrongfully called back goals which earned them wins against Lecce, Cagliari, and Treviso and a draw against Lazio for a surplus of 7 points. Disagree? Go ahead but good luck proving Juve were more favoured than either of these two clubs.

Not too long ago the doping issue arose. All Juve’s coaches were arrested and embarrassed. The media was all over it. Then an Italian court of law found each of the accused not guilty and the media didn’t find it interesting enough to write about. So that attempt didn’t work. Then we got a new accusation. Italy’s “minnows” are letting themselves be beaten by Juve and playing their hearts off against Milan to “give” the scudetto to Juve. This one is by far my favourite.

“Why did Messina play so hard?”, maybe to avoid relegation, genius. Why did Treviso play so hard against Juve? Why did Cagliari do the same? Why do teams like Roma, Lazio, Chievo and Fiorentina always seem to have the game of their season against Juve? Juve are public enemy number 1 in Italy because they are Italy’s most successful team and every team that faces them brings their A game. Yet somehow it’s these very squads who have given Juve an edge? This one is beyond stupid.

I suggest you think back to the days when Miccoli played for Perugia under Juve ownership. Perugia managed to eliminate Juve from the Coppa Italia and draw us in the Serie A. Guess who scored? Miccoli did in an attempt to get called up to the big squad. The little guys always try to impress against the big guns and no one is bigger than Juventus.

Now no one seems to be pointing out the fact that the scandal rocking Italian football has been expanded to include Lazio, Fiorentina, and of course Milan.

Nice try people, but you’ll need a more credible story next time. I’m sure we’ll all hear it soon enough. It is too hard for any fan to digest that their team is not the best.

A Cagliari fan was honest enough to do that. And it is from him that I got a lot of the material for this one before doing my own research. He said: "I’ll be the guy that leads by example. My team is in the relegation battle. They rarely finish a game with 11 players on the pitch and as a result have the most bookings in Serie A with 105, and have the most booked player in the league (Daniele Conti). If they wind up relegated you won’t hear me crying about officials though, I guarantee it. But then I’m a man."

If Lenin walked around the offices of a company like Yahoo or Intel or Cisco, he'd think communism had won. Everyone would be wearing the same clothes, have the same kind of office (or rather, cubicle) with the same furnishings, and address one another by their first names instead of by
honorifics. Everything would seem exactly as he'd predicted, until he looked at their bank accounts.
