Category: Match Reports

Against Chievo, Capello lines up Mutu to replace the unavailable Nedved and chooses the partnership Trezeguet-Ibrahimovic up front. It’s the very Swede who gets dangerous in the first few minutes with a right-footed drive, deflected by Fontana. Then it’s Balzaretti’s turn from the edge of the area but his shot is too high. Juventus attack but it’s Chievo who hit the target: after 21 minutes, Semioli puts the ball in from the right flank and Franceschini, lying in wait in the middle of the box, beats Buffon kicking the ball with the flat of his foot (1-0). The Bianconeri try to fight back right away with Mutu who, served for by Ibrahimovic, kicks a right-footed shot unfortunately deflected out for a corner. Eleven minutes later, Juventus earn the draw: a free kick by Camoranesi from the downfield area and a great leap by Vieia who beats Fontana nodding the ball into the bottom corner and it’s 1-1. Chievo show their character and try to hit back with Semioli who, after 40 minutes, kicks a left-footed shot from the edge of the box but it ends out. In the final minutes, Mutu’s free kick is saved by Fontana.

At the start of the second half, it’s still Mutu who gets dangerous with a cross pass from the left, deflected out for a corner by Fontana. After 5 minutes, Vieira gets into the box but he’s hindered by Mandelli before being able to aim at goal. Capello wants to win and goes for the trident attack sending Del Piero in to replace Camoranesi but it’s Chievo who attack, with Giunti’s finish from the long range ending high over the crossbar. The game is much struggled and both sides concede little room; on 27’ minutes, Ibrahimovic finds some and drives down the left flank and passes to Del Piero, but the Captain is anticipated by the Gialloblu defence. After 35 minutes, Del Piero passes to Trezeguet but the French striker is anticipated by Fontana. Then Ibrahimovic’s attempt on goal from a thirty-metre range misses the target. It takes seven more minutes to see a scoring occasion: on 42’ minutes, Fontana comes out in vain on Del Piero’s corner, Ibrahimovic tries to shoot at goal on the turn but he commits foul. Juventus go for the final attack but Chievo defend well and the final result does not change. It ends 1-1.
